11th Annual Art Outside 2015 [Preview]
We are just a few months away from Art Outside 2015! Art Outside is a more-than-music festival held in Downtown, Texas, about an hour outside of Austin. During the festival the grounds of Apache Pass are transformed into an artistic, creative, interactive wonderland for adults and children alike. There is never a dull or boring moment at Art Outside; something exciting is happening at any given time – and you can even dance the night away up until the sunrise set in the dome! The festival will have dozens of free workshops, yoga classes, and a ‘kids korner’ for the children. This will be the festivals 11th year and the lineup is incredible, with some of the most talented artists of our time among the list.
This year the art and camping festival will be adding a fourth day to the usual three and will now be held October 22-25th. The camping aspect of Art Outside is great – set within a 100 acre pecan grove it is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. The sense of community is strong among the camps, you can feel the energy and excitement throughout the grounds – it feels like coming home. Some groups will set up large camps, some within domes, some with flags, couches, decorations, lights, even kitchens! So many people go all out for the occasion and it is so fun to see how creative people can be with their camps.
The music at Art Outside just keeps getting better and better each year. There is truly something for everyone – whether you want to chill in a hammock and listen to some tunes, get down in the dome, or just have a great time over at the folk stage – you can have it all at Art Outside! Some of the biggest names this year include Bonobo, Lettuce, Papadosio, Greensky Bluegrass, Boombox, Bluetech, D.V.S*, and the list goes on and on. Be sure to check the schedule so you don’t miss anyone. Check out the full line up here!
Aside from the art of sound, visual art displays are everywhere among the festival grounds. There are art vehicles, canvases hanging from the trees, large interactive displays you can get inside or control, and my personal favorite – the art gallery. It hosts some of the most incredible art I have every seen. Every year, amazing artists display their work to be seen by festival-goers within the beautiful, sacred space of the art gallery. There are also live painters and performers – it’s amazing watching artists work on their projects and to see them evolve throughout the event. Most artists have prints available for sale so be sure to bring some extra cash if you want to take home your own piece of art and support these amazing artists!
The food at the festival is great – there are dozens of food vendors, with many offering vegan and vegetarian options. You can also find lots of yummy drink options including teas, coffees, etc. I have never attended a festival with so many delicious food and drink options! Art Outside is very eco-friendly and utilizes recycling and composting for the event, leading the way for eco-responsible festivals. There is a ‘leave no trace’ policy in place, you are to leave the grounds as you found them which is pristine and clean. Aside from food vendors there are also dozens of shops selling crystals, jewelry, clothing, hula-hoops, and a little bit of everything in-between.
