5 Reasons Why Mysteryland Is New York’s Favorite Festival
Since arriving on American soil two years ago in 2014, Mysteryland (June 10-13) has grown and improved exponentially each year. Hosted by the extraordinary Netherlands-based promoter ID&T, Mysteryland stands as one of the longest running electronic music festivals in the world. Since the festival’s early days back in 1993, Mysteryland has paved the way for music festival culture around the world. After two phenomenal years in upstate New York, Mysteryland has become fully entrenched in the dance music culture of the Big Apple. As a two year veteran of Mysteryland, I can’t wait to head back to the blissful bounty of Bethel Woods.
This year Mysteryland will be making some huge changes. However, the good vibes and awesome experiences will still be in full effect as we embark on our third straight journey down the rabbit hole. In this post we will take a look at a few of the reasons why Mysteryalnd has become New York’s undisputed #1 music festival. Tickets HERE!
The Woodstock Grounds
One of the keys to any exceptional Music Festival is a memorable venue. All the greats have one. Shambhala has the Salmo River Ranch, Electric Forest has Rothbury Forest and Mysteryland has Bethel Woods. Great venues like these seem to retain all the positive vibrations of past gatherings throughout the years.
For a place like Bethel Woods, which hosted the legendary Woodstock ’69, it’s almost as if you can feel the joyous memories that have seeped into the soil. The lush rolling hills of Bethel Woods is a wondrous and enchanting backdrop, perfect for spending a weekend away from the real world. ID&T does an amazing job of erecting breathtaking art installations that transform this rustic paradise into a truly otherworldly playground.
I love being a New York native, and I love the energy and grandeur of the city. However, nothing compares to kicking off your shoes and feeling the grass beneath your toes as you lose yourself in the magic of the music around you. Concrete and steel certainly does not make for the ideal festival atmosphere in my opinion. Only a relatively short two hour drive away, Bethel Woods embodies the ideal escape for festival goers in the NYC area. No music festival within or without the city limits can boast such an incredible venue.
If you are a real New Yorker, you have at least heard of Smorgasburg. If you’ve never even hear of Smorgasburg let me enlighten you. Launched back in May of 2011 as an off shoot of the wildly successful Brooklyn Flea Market, Smorgasburg is a massive food festival which takes place on every Saturday and Sunda from April to November in Brooklyn, New York. Featuring mouthwatering fare from over 100 local and regional vendors, Smorgasburg has become one of the most well-known gastronomical events on the eastern seaboard.
Aptly dubbed the “The Woodstock of Eating” by the New York Times, Smorgasburg has become a New York culinary landmark over the years. Mysteryland proudly welcomes Smorgasburg to Bethel Woods every year to supply the fantastic food that has become a staple of the event. Normally festival food tastes fantastic because its essentially you’re only option and any half decent burger or slice of pizza will taste phenomenal in that situation. But when it comes to Smorgasburg’s insane delicacies, there is truly no competition. Perhaps the best food you’ll have all summer, Smorgasburg puts Mysteryland over the top! Three Day Expansion
One of the biggest changes for this year’s festival is the expansion to three full days of music. Past editions of Mysteryland only spanned two days, however festival goers can look forward to three massive days music and bliss.
One of the only grievances I had the last two years at Mysteryland was my desire for more for the price tag. More music, more camping more memories at Bethel Woods. Now with three days on the lineup Mysteryland easily blows any other festival in New York out of the water.
As always Mysteryland has put together and all-star roster of world class artists. Actually it can be argued that this is the festival’s most outrageous lineup to date. With massive headliners like Skrillex, Bassnectar and skyrocketing Odesza, Mysteryland can go toe to toe with any lineup in the world. However the talent definitely does not end there. In fact the eclecticism of Mysteryland’s cast of characters is what really sets it above the fray.
Funk phenoms Gramatik and GRiZ have returned for their second straight year after smashing the boat in 2015. New heavyweights like Zeds Dead, Mr. Carmack and Gesaffelstein will also be bringing their die hard followings to the party. Living legends like John Digweed, Lee Burridge and Claude Vonstroke will be on hand to teach lessons for the eager crowds. The lineup is also rounded out by top of the line talent like Emancipator, The Floozies, MIJA and Keys N Krates. Furthermore the complete left field addition of Young Thug has totally piqued my interest so I can’t wait to see all the madness that will unfold.
Finally the main reason that Mysteryland has taken NYC’s number one spot is the growing tradition that the festival has cultivated. There is a real sense of identity taking form within the community of Mysteryland faithful. 2016’s edition of the festival will cement it as an institution and not simply a passing fad. For whatever reason festivals in New York all have their limitations. Some have had to pick up and leave the state completely while others have faced their own trial and tribulations with cancellations and mishaps. When it comes down to it, Mysteryland has filled a huge void in one of the most exciting markets in the country.
As a three year vet, I truly feel a part of this festival. I’m proud to have been there back in 2014 when it took its first steps. I was excited to see how kept improving in 2015, and now I can’t wait to experience Mysteryland as full three day festival during the heart of summer. New York is a place of character, tradition and innovation. Mysteryland now perfectly embodies all of those tenets.
