A New Paul For President
The last name Paul has been no stranger to presidential campaigns since Ron Paul began running in 1988. He also ran in 2008 and again in 2012 with no success. He finally gave up, and decided not to run in 2016. However, you’ll still be seeing signs that read “Paul 2016” on front lawns across America because his son, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, is running for president. Much is known about his father, but what do we really know about Rand?
Rand Paul was raised by both of his parents in Lake Jackson, Texas. He attended Baylor University and received his doctorate degree from Duke Medical School in 1988. After finishing medical school and training, Paul moved with his wife Kelley to Bowling Green, Kentucky to start a family and begin his career in ophthalmology.
Paul is not a career politician like most people who run for president. In fact, he didn’t even become a politician until 2010 when he was elected to the Senate for Kentucky. Paul and his wife have three sons together and are very involved in their lives, Rand often volunteering to be coaches on their baseball and soccer teams. They are also devout Christians who are active in their church.
Paul believes that during his time in the medical profession he spent much time working with people of all backgrounds solving problems and providing them with help whenever they needed. He feels this has prepared him to be a perfect candidate for president in 2016.
There are a number of issues that Rand Paul is running on such as advancing energy security, balancing our nation’s budget, and expanding economic opportunity.
Rand Paul says he is 100% pro- life meaning he does not believe in abortions for any reason whatsoever. He would like to fix the country’s broken justice system which seems to be locking up non-violent offenders for excessive amounts of time, and disproportionate numbers of young black men.
“The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Many of those people deserve to be in prison; however, some of them do not,” Paul said.
Paul has an interest in protecting gun rights and protecting privacy and civil liberties from the federal government.
“We must always embrace individual liberty and enforce the constitutional rights of all Americans — rich and poor, immigrant and native, black and white,” Paul said.
He wants to put a limit on the time a person can serve in the Senate or House of Representatives to 12 years so new people can come in with new ideas and new ways of thinking.
“What America needs is not just another politician or more promises. What America needs is a revival,” Paul said.
Rand is also not opposed to going to war if he feels there is enough reason to send our troops there. He also wants to do more for veterans when they do come home from war.
“I tell people I won’t vote to go to war unless I’m ready to go or send my kids,” Paul said.
There have been rumors that Paul is dropping out of the race for presidency, but he says they are just that, rumors. He says he has enough financial backing and support to win the race. Whether or not he can be the first Paul to become president I don’t know, but I do know he won’t go down without a fight. Like father, like son.
“If you hear me out, I believe you’ll discover that what motivates me more than any other issue is the defense of everyone’s rights,” Paul said.
