AF THE NAYSAYER and Shizuku Kawahara (tinörks) Release Single
Beatmaker AF THE NAYSAYER (Amahl Abdul-Khaliq) continuously drops luscious, vibrant sounds that have us bouncing on dance floors, in our cars, or pretty much wherever we happen to be. I’ve written quite a bit about AF’s unmissable music, which is grounded in hip-hop but veers into kaleidoscopically-tinged universes of sound. When I listen to his songs, I’m on a fast track to sonic bliss that carries over into the rest of my day. It’s impossible not to feel happier after you listen to AF THE NAYSAYER.
Now, AF is working on a new EP, Armor Wing Battle Unit, and the single he recently dropped is all that we’ve come to expect from him and more. It’s a song he’s previously released, “R-96,” which was on his LP The Audodidact Instrumentals, Vol. I. But it features vocals from Shizuku Kawahara of tinörks, an Osaka-born electronica and folktronica trio. tinörks makes dreamy electronic beats that conjure dream visions of airy landscapes just beyond the reach of the waking mind’s eye. Shizuku’s vocals on this version of “R-96” add a layer of softness and an ethereal quality that takes the beats to another level. The bounce is all still present (and fun as hell) but on top of it there’s a dreaminess that is oh so sweet.
AF’s forays into collaboration have been amazing so far (check out his song with Juzzy Orange) and I hope there are more to come. For now, listen to “R-96” on Bandcamp and SoundCloud, and check out the video teaser below.
