AK-X: Four Days of Music, Snowboarding, and Madness in NorthEast Iceland
This weekend, in Iceland’s Capital of the North, Akureyri, a festival combining snowboarding, music, and positive vibrations will take place over the course of four days.
The festival, known as AK-Extreme, or simply AK-X, will have multiple snowboarding competitions as well as some pretty incredible musicians and DJs during the evening. The main snowboarding event, the Eimskip Big Jump, will be held on Saturday evening and will be streamed live online for those at home, though the link is not yet available. AK-X’s official website describes the jump as “a terrifying Big Jump set up out of fifteen shipping containers from Eimskip, smack dab in the middle of town.” And just in case you were wondering what that looks like, here’s last year’s version:
Each night, downtown Akureyri will host some of Iceland’s most fascinating performers ranging from dance music to hip-hop to punk rock and metal bands. One group, a creative hip-hop collective known as Shades of Reykjavík, even produced a song especially for this year’s event called “AK-47.” In true Shades of Reykjavík fashion, both the song and the accompanying video were recorded in a single take. The video is worth checking for so many reasons of which you will understand only after viewing it, but as an added bonus, the video contains footage of prior events at AK-X. Check it out below.
And if you find yourself unable to watch the video, you can check out this version on the Shades of Reykjavík SoundCloud below.
Shades of Reykjavík will perform on Friday at midnight. Other personal favorites of mine are Intro Beats and Housekell playing Thursday at 23:00.
Tickets for the event are available here for 3.900 ISK, or roughly $29, which is kind of amazing considering the rest of the lineup! Check out the schedule below:
