Pennybirdrabbit Releases ‘For Love’ EP [Review]
What do you get when you cross a forest nymph and a tender voiced cherub? The answer is quite simply, Pennybirdrabbit. This golden voiced, psychedelic ray of sunshine first caught our attention years ago when she was featured on Skrillex’s wildly popular track ‘All I Ask of You,’ as only Penny. In the the three years since then she has evolved as an artist and consistently released quality EPs that have revealed her talent as an incredible singer and songwriter. On February 11, Penny released her third EP For Love. Where her first two releases Treehouse and Safer relied heavily on a prevalent electronic influence, For Love is a much more somber collection of songs with a conspicuously acoustic feel throughout.
Penny has an absolutely pristine voice that is both comforting and heartbreaking all at once. Her vocal skills coupled with the infectiously bright production of Young & Sick, combine to create a powerfully lovelorn collection of ballads. Penny’s melancholic lyrics are inviting, relatable and intimate. On songs like ‘Time’ and ‘Look For Love’ she has the uncanny ability to swaddle you in her melodies and transport her listeners to a place that only her voice can reach. Pennybirdrabbit lives her music and you can feel that in each song. There is an unmistakable honesty that is present in this EP and I believe that is her best quality. The highlight of the EP and the song that most completely sums up Penny’s style is ‘Cheap Goodbyes.’ It’s a sad yet triumphant tune that exemplifies just how moving Penny’s voice is. Its hard not to get a little choked up when she sweetly delivers the powerful chorus “save your cheap goodbyes, because I know that I’m worth more.”
This release really shows the range and depth of talent signed to OWSLA. Although many people are only aware of the label’s mega famous front man Skrillex, OWSLA is full of special artists who excel in numerous genres. Pennybirdrabbit is an artist who has exhibited talent, patience and most of all consistency. Hopefully 2014 will prove to be the year Penny begins to get her well deserved attention.
