Aura Music Festival Artist Spotlight: The Heavy Pets
Now in its third year, the Aura Music & Arts Festival in St. Cloud, Florida has quickly become one of the preeminent destinations for fans and bands alike. Profiled below is the first of 3 three of our favorite bands that are hitting the stage at Aura:
The Heavy Pets (2 Sets):
The Heavy Pets are a band that scorns the typical pitfalls of jambands when it comes to poor songwriting or singing, as ever since their debut album, Whale, in 2007, this band has skyrocketed in both popularity and their talent has followed suit. Not afraid to go outside their comfort zone, the band traded in their electrics for acoustic guitars on their latest record, Swim Out Past the Sun. The band’s popularity has been reflected in the size of the venues they have played. The band has played venues such as the Bowery Ballroom and the Brooklyn Bowl in New York and the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale, as well as The Georgia Theater in Athens, has proved that this band is ready for the spotlight. The band is also a stalwart of the festival circuit, having played everything from Bonnaroo to Summercamp along with their own festival, PetZoo. Combining influences from Rock and Pop, as well as jazz, funk, and even some reggae to go along with heavy improvisation that their live shows are known for. This is the band’s second year in a row playing the festival, and last year’s set was an absolute scorcher and can be found here. The band has two sets this year, and festivalgoers should make sure to get to at least one of these, as this band is poised for big things in the future to build off of their immense current success and potential.
Overall, this event has become a mainstay of the spring festival season, and its move to March provides optimal weather conditions for campers and festivalgoers alike in the bucolic setting of Forever Florida in St. Cloud. Tickets for this great event are $90 if you purchase ahead and $115 at the gate and can be found here. Be sure to check out the three bands listed above as well as the more than three-dozen other bands playing throughout the course of the weekend.
