Austin Free Week 2015
It’s not easy being the live music capital of the world, but Austin seems to manage. We have Austin City Limits in early Fall, SXSW in early Spring, Old Settlers, FunFunFun Fest, Euphoria, Art Outside, Pecan Street and oh so many more music and culture festivals.
And we have Free Week. Which is really like free weeks ‘cuz we’re too partied out to count.
One week (but really like two) with hundreds of free shows. Taking place every year in early January, it is definitely where the whole, “live music capital” label comes alive. Every venue is chocked full of incredible musical acts featuring some of our fairest and finest acts.
I’ve already began perusing the lineup and I am becoming overwhelmed with feelings of excitement, anticipation and a little bit of FOMO.
To narrow the enormous list down, here are four of the events I am looking forward to.
Empire Control Room will be hosting free, live music events for eleven evenings this year. Thursday, January 1st they will host an event by one of Austin’s best psychedelic show creators, Shame Shame Productions. These talented laddies are bringing Satalights, Violinda Lola, Continental Drift, girling, The Western Front and Cultures to Empire Control Room. The party is sure to have badass projections, full-bodied sound and a collection of Austin’s most musical and creative to dance the night away with.
Another show I am itching to see at Empire Control Room will be held on Saturday, January 10th. This lineup includes one of my favorite homegrown acts, Major Major Major, along with our beloved Shivery Shakes, Milezo, Otis the Destroyer and some other talented friends. This evening will have a different vibe than the aforementioned event but with energetic acts like Major Major Major and the rompin’ stompin’ beats of Shivery Shakes, I think it will be a memorable evening.
On Sunday, January 4th lets all head to the Historic Scoot In to see a show sure to transcend us to a more celestial existence, featuring Cosm, Seven Circles, Vorcha, Play by Numbers and Dilute. The Scoot In is an incredibly unique venue, I am really excited what magic is cooked up here on January 4th.
Friday, January 2nd, join me for an indoor concert at Stubb’s where the one-of-a-kind Golden Dawn Arkestra, Star Parks and Tinnarose will take the stage in all their collective weirdness. Golden Dawn Arkestra is one act I’ll be sure not to miss.
Do512 has a superb collection of all the happenings of Free Week. Austines, Central-Texanites, anyone willing to hop in the car and drive to the Lone Star State come and join us for a raucously unreal week(ish) of partying. Let’s make Austin Free Week 2015 the best one yet.
