Backwoods TOTD: Liquid Stranger – “Shatter”
In the world electronic dance music, it can become a daunting task for listeners to decide upon their favorite subgenre. Liquid Stranger specializes in free form bass music that is unrestricted by the designated attributes of a specific style of EDM. Martin Staaf has spent years experimenting with various genres and sounds to successfully achieve veteran status. By flowing through numerous elements of dance music, Liquid Stranger personifies the aqueous and transformative nature of liquid. According to Staaf, “The reality is twofold. Liquid represents something fluid and formless that can be adapted to any given container. In other words, I can go seamlessly between any genre, tempo, emotion, or whatever I want. You never know what I’m going to do next.”
Liquid Stranger’s latest single, “Shatter,” takes the listener on a cavernous journey. The track has an ethereal beginning with what sounds like water dripping. This emphasizes the liquid aspect of Staaf’s music and signals that we are about to embark on an exploration through sound. A gradual buildup draws us further into the track, while we prepare for the bass to drop. The bouncing bass revvs our internal engine and encourages one to headbang. Glitchy lyrics add to the bouncy feel of the track and vocalize the audience saying, “Yeah!”
The middle of the track gives listeners some downtime to recover and delve further into a mysterious cave. Synths mimic twinkling stars, while an upbeat bass makes our bodies move. Hi-hats in the background give “Shatter” a trap vibe without being overwhelming. Towards the end of the track, the bass comes back with a vengence to make sure every body is moving. “Shatter” fades into mystical drops of sound, leaving the listener unrestrained and in the perfect partying mood.
