Backwoods TOTD: Manic Focus – “On The Horizon”
Hailing from Chicago, Manic Focus (aka John “JmaC” McCarten) is blowing up the electronic dance music scene with his unique style of EDM that flows seamlessly through genres. From bass to hip-hop to tranquil to funky, Manic Focus’ dynamic sound represents a whole new frontier for the electronic genre. This beat magician of future-bass concoctions declares his music to be “the corner of hip-hop, funk & electronic soul music.” We certainly agree and cannot wait for his set on Sunday, September 4th at Backwoods Music Festival.
While you are waiting for the festival this weekend, get ready for your trip with “On The Horizon” from Manic Focus’ latest album, Cerebral Eclipse. This week’s TOTD accurately describes the quickly approaching festival which is almost within your grasp. There’s no need to stress out with this laidback and soulful single playing in the background.
A tranquil guitar intro sets the tone of “On The Horizon.” From there, echoing vocals intertwine with a groovy melody. The lyrics remind us of that joyful feeling you get at a concert — it’s like being on another planet. Although the track mainly features an electro-soul genre, Manic Focus emphasizes his unique flavor with a bass drop midway through. This artistic choice is a beautiful juxtaposition and encourages the audience to get the funk down.
After a bass-induced bridge, “On The Horizon” transforms back into a spaced out future bass track. Manic Focus’ expertise in playing with the tempo and layers of the track give him the ability to exhibit a variety of genres. The listener travels through a multitude of musical dimensions, and by the end you feel like you’ve learned the secret to happiness = MUSIC!
