BangOn NYC: Creatures of the Night [REVIEW]
Bang On’s “Creatures of the Night” party last weekend predictably brought out the weird in Brooklyn. Freaks, music lovers and people in LED embroidered unicorn costumes bought the ticket and took the ride deep into Bushwick near the Knollwood Park Cemetery.
As soon as I entered the warehouse I realized just how far Bang On has come. They are undeniably among the pre-eminent organizers of major warehouse parties in Brooklyn, and unlike other promoters, they’ve managed to steer clear of any permit setbacks. The visual experience of a Bang On event is always unique and always tailored to a new location, creating an element of surprise in every event. The 3D projection mapping set up (courtesy of Rhizome NYC) of this event made the warehouse look like it was designed specifically for this purpose. These producers mean serious business and I have no doubt they will be delivering this kind of high quality and innovative visual production consistently for parties to come. Despite the slightly smaller set up relative to their Halloween and New Years parties, the warehouse and surrounding area were perfectly designed for the amount of people who came out. And everyone was finally able to enjoy the (somewhat) warmer weather in the silent disco that was situated right along the outside of the warehouse.
Headliners SNBRN and Dr. Fresch did the LA underground tech house scene justice and kept the main room raging hard for hours on end. A wide variety of artists cycled through the silent disco; my favorite sets came from Eelrak and Treehaus who both went on around 2:30am. The juxtaposition of Eelrak’s techno and tech house and Treehaus’s future bass and spacey trap made a prime-time dance party inevitable, with some nice pyrotechnics to top it off.
As most of us know, Bang On parties aren’t primarily about the music. They are about the creativity and the people too. And every time I go to a Bang On event I meet new people, make new friends, and simply enjoy the refreshing openness of everyone around me. The make shift festival-vibes that Bang On pulls off will ensure a memorable experience for anyone willing to have one.
