Basslights Comes Back To The Mothership
The weekend of December 27th and 28th 2014, 15,000 people will be coming from miles around to Hampton, Virginia to embark on the 2 day event titled Basslights, where electronic music titans Bassnectar and Pretty Lights share headlining status across the 2 night event. This time around, these 2 artists are bringing Chromeo, Beats Antique, Eliot Lipp and Exmag with them to help get attendees dancing early on in the night.
By combining sound and force with weight, the Bassnectar experience engulfs the senses. The experience of Bassnectar is more visceral than auditory, as the music sets any stage for an adventure without rules or limitations. On Bassnectar’s stage, there is no hesitation in fusing the familiar with the strange or the classic with the cutting edge.
Relying heavily on digital sampling from the inception and more recently incorporating a live band and symphony, Derek Vincent Smith performs under the moniker of Pretty Lights to bring audiences an auditory and visual experience like none other. If you asked Derek what his music is considered he might say “Electro Hip-Hop Soul”, but his show and his sound could never fully be captured in just 4 words. Once you witness his live show you will understand why he is called Pretty Lights and revered as one of the best touring productions in the world.
If you aren’t familiar with this roster of supporting acts allow us to catch you up to speed:
Canadian boogie/alternative dance duo formed in 2002 in Montreal by Dave 1 (David Macklovitch) who plays guitar and sings, and P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel) on the synths, keys and talk box.
Comprised of 3 members; David Satori, Zoe Jakes, and Tommy Cappel aka Sidecar Tommy. This trio is an experimental electronic music group that fuses world sounds and heavy percussives with tribal fusion dance and performance art. A Beats Antique show is like going to the circus and a multilevel concert production all in one. This is an act you surely don’t want to miss and they are going to bring the heat and the beat for all you freaks at Basslights.
Check out their rendition of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” :
A live funk electronic dance music group that is part of Gramatiks “Lowtemp” label, Exmag helps bring sexy sounds back into electronic music.
One of the breakout artists from the Pretty Lights Music imprint, Eliot Lipp has released 7 albums and undergone 10 years of touring. A genre-bending catalogue spanning from electro to trap and everything in between. Eliot Lipp is a risk-taker and his music is evidence of such. I would keep my eye on this Pretty Lights Music label mate.
For the past 3 years, Hampton, VA has been the home for Basslights and each year this town welcomes the mass of electronic music lovers with open arms. Some of the motels and hotels even put special Welcoming signs out to greet the attendees. Like this lovely sign found at the Days Inn!
