Artist Spotlight: Lake Street Dive at the Believe In Music Festival in Baltimore
The first annual “Believe In Music Festival” will take place on Saturday, July 26th at Oregon Ridge Park in Baltimore, Maryland. The festival will bring together a number of local, regional, and nationally known acts for what is going be an incredible event. One group that has been getting a lot of attention across the country this year is
Lake Street Dive.
Lake Street Dive met in the early 1990’s at the New England Conservatory. Looking at them a decade later, their lineup and vision remained unchanged since day one. They are described as one of the hottest touring acts on the circuit today. As part of their tour for their latest release, Bad Self Portraits, Lake Street Dive were honored with guest performance slots on late-night staples The Colbert Report and the Late Show with David Letterman. With each eye-opening live performance, the quartet thrived off the energy of the television crowds and catapulted themselves into national recognition.
Lake Street Dive’s genre is hard to pinpoint. Their sound evokes jazz, soul and blues. Hailing from Tennessee, vocalist Rachael Price captivates her audience with powerful vocals reminiscent of Etta James. Originally from Iowa, Bridget Kearney, LSD’s upright bassist and background vocalist, is known for her riveting and high-powered bass lines. Sitting in the background on the drumkit is Philadelphia native Michael Calabrese. Without missing a beat, his fills and tempos keeps the band molded together nicely. Trumpet and guitar player Mike “McDuck” Olson is the driving force that glued the band mates together almost 10 years ago. Olson knows that it wasn’t just their individual skills, but also their passion for music and strong friendships that kept the band moving forward so cohesively.
Lake Street Dive is a prime example of how dedication and drive can lead to success in the music industry. Other bands may see dollar signs in front of their contracts, but for LSD, passion for their fans and love of the music is what keeps this quartet going.
