Big Eyes Refuses To Be Controlled On Third LP
Steeped in rock roots and pop punk culture,Kait Eldridge and her project Big Eyes, have seemingly blended the best of both worlds in their latest LP, Stake My Claim. Previously mentioned in a track of the day, Eldridge noted the song and album overall was about not letting anyone have control over you; throughout the course of the album, the idea is constant.
The titular opening song does wonders to jump start a person’s listening experience; succeeding is “Behind Your Eyes,” a stark contrast from the opener, in which the power-pop sound washes over you in an extremely pop number. “Just Not Right” is another bop and quite easily my favorite among the album. “Giving It Up For Good” is quite nostalgic as it reminds me of angsty teenage years, in which I wanted to be as kick ass as I could be (but ultimate failed). The first half of the album concludes with “Leave This Town,” with the opening building up to three minutes of pop-punk glory.
Beginning the second portion of Stake My Claim is another pop-punk number (“When You Were 25”) with a rockin’ Runaways-esque “Cheerleader” tune following suit. “Curse of the Tides” swings high and low under a minute, but is thoroughly enjoyable. “Count the Pegs” ushers in a rock anthem — where Big Eyes’ influences come into play. Ending the album is “All’s I Know,” starting off softly before turning into a raucous jam. Stake My Claim solidifies the quartet’s status in pop-punk/power-punk music; they feel at home and at ease when performing these tracks and it flows quite nicely.
