Big Wild Making Big Moves: Suwannee Hulaween Artist Spotlight
Every so often in the music industry, an artist comes along that questions the mainstream and defies all musical boundaries, fearlessly, with a refreshingly ahead-of-the-times sound. Someone who refuses to be merely another face amongst a sea of producers and DJs, a game-changer if you will. Today, I decided to showcase one of my recent favorites, someone who’s no noob to producing tunes, but has just recently started receiving much deserved recognition for his unique, futuristic sound which is enhanced by multiple live instruments, which he performs all by himself. The one-man band I’m referring to is Jackson, more commonly known by his stage name Big Wild.
Having had an impressively early start in making beats, circa middle and high school, Jackson experimented with hip-hop beats and focused on small collaborative projects with various artists in the beginning stages of his producing. After studying music business at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, Jackson progressed into the electronic scene, shifting his focus towards solo productions, yet still staying true to his hip-hop roots as heard in some of his trappier productions. In December of 2013, the up-and-coming artist released his first EP in affiliation with Cosmonostro record label, entitled Native Echoes, which included three tracks and a full mix. The title of his debut EP couldn’t have represented the sound of the album more perfectly; the tracks embody an overall tribal feel to them with the addition of various drums and powerful vocal samples that resemble that of a tribal chant. Drippy xylophone and keyboard develops the songs to give them a more modernized and futuristic sound, while the occasional addition of flute heightens the melodic aspect of the tracks. Listening to these masterpieces just once over isn’t the way to do it, either. Big Wild’s sound maintains a certain cleanliness to it even though it is composed of intricate layers and infinite sounds, he somehow manages to keep everything together. And he does so by himself – incorporating keyboard, a drumpad, a cajon drum, and even a microphone so he can whistle while he works.
Aside from original tracks, Big Wild may be more widely known and recognized for producing a slew of ingenious remixes and mash-ups including tracks from reputable artists in the electronic music scene, such as Odesza, GRiZ, and Champagne Drip. Tweaking top hits like Odesza – “Say My Name” feat. Zyra (Big Wild remix) and GRiZ feat. Talib Kweli – “For The Love” (Big Wild remix) earned Jackson some much deserved recognition within the electronic music circuit, and proved that hard work pays off when he embarked on tour as a supporting act for Odesza during their In Return tour last winter. Also, this LA-based producer just gained a lot of props during the month of September when he toured as an opening act for Gramatik all month long. Currently on tour supporting funk sensation GRiZ and performing opening acts with Louie Lastic and Muzzy Bearr, Big Wild has no where to go but up from here. After concluding the GRiZ Say It Loud tour, which kicked off last night in Tuscaloosa, AL, Jackson will perform with The Floozies for a night followed by a short couple of weeks for down time, and then it’s right back to the hustle as he joins Odesza once again from the end of November to mid-December.
