Bluegrass Attack at Penn’s Peak; Yonder Mountain Wows!
Last Thursday, August 21st, 2014 a progressive bluegrass band by the name of Yonder Mountain String Band stole the night at one of Pennsylvania’s premier music venues: Penn’s Peak.
Comprised originally as a 4 member band, the group is currently made up of 3 members: Ben Kaufmann (Bass,Vocals), Dave Johnston (Banjo, Vocals), And Adam Aijala (Guitar, Vocals) [Founding member Jeff Austin parted ways with the band citing creative differences back in April 2014]. Yonder Mountain fuses bluegrass, string music and progressive folk music with their own twists and variations based on personal experiences and tastes to bring your ears a sound that you won’t soon forget not to mention Stop moving from.
Last thursday night the band stayed true to their roots while also adding more depth and new flavor to their already cherished and praised sound by adding to the lineup Grammy award winning Recording Artist and Record Producer Jerry Douglas on dobro, Former Fiddle player of Cornmeal Allie Kral, and mandolin player Jake Jolliff.
That night’s ensemble performed two extensive sets incorporating crowd favorite “Shakedown Street” as their 4th to last song. The pick was aptly fitting seeing how hours before the show Penn’s Peaks parking lot became the impromptu home of Yonder Mountains fans own rendition of Shakedown street, where fans set up tables and easy up tents to sell merchandise and food before the night’s festivities. Anytime Yonder comes to town that is enough reason for the locals and fellow music lovers to throw down and party for hours in the parking lot before the show.
This was easily the best and the most exhilarating Yonder Mountain performance I have witnessed to date at Penn’s Peak. If That show was any glimpse as to what to expect from them at Catskill Chill with their headlining performance then I highly suggest purchasing your Festival tickets now if you haven’t already. That venue in the Catskill mountains topped with a Yonder performance has perfection written all over it.
