Brenda Wood Responds to Coca-Cola Commericial Criticism
On Super Bowl Sunday (2/2), Coca-Cola aired a patriotic commercial featuring a multilingual version of “America the Beautiful.” The commercial received tons of backlash on Twitter and even Fox News for deviating from English. One contributor claimed it was the wrong use for the song.
Brenda Wood, an anchorwoman for a local news station in Georgia, decided to put them in their places. Historically America is a nation made up of immigrants (with the exception of Native Americans) and it is based on the idea of multiculturalism. The responses to “It’s Beautiful” are baffling, disheartening, and xenophobic. Leaving aside Coca-Cola’s possible motives for the concept, this ad, in essence, is an expression of American culture, which is a culture of many cultures. As Woods puts it, “America was built on opening its arms to the world.” Watch her brilliant slam of the critics below.
