Brooklyn Loves Beats Antique! (Photos @ The Brooklyn Bowl 5/13/12)
Beats Antique is the perfect blend of old and new sounds so sweet that they will pluck on the strings of your heart while toying with your most animalistic instincts and emotions. It is hard not to move your body along with with beautiful master motivator/producer Zoe Jakes and her fellow dancer Auberon Shull, as the mutli-talented David Satori and “Sidecar” Tommy Cappel lay down some of the most hypnotic rhythms found west of the Atlantic. Sylvian Carton on the clarinet and baratone sax is just the whipped cream on top that sweetens the whole production.
The Brooklyn Bowl draws some of the most diverse crowds of any venue in NYC, so it is no surprise that the place packs out when Beats Antique is in town. While introducing the band it was pointed out that “…Some of you look like your IN Beats Antique!” There is definitely a specific style attached to the troupe, largely in part due to the costumes that Zoey busts out every few songs, draping silk and jewels over the perfect amount of skin. The open dance floor gives people space to sway and twirl, and the up-close stage makes the show that much more intimate when Zoe and Auberon reach out and interact with the crowd. Even though there was space to dance, the crowd was tightly packed especially for a Sunday night. This is probably also largely due to the fact that we don’t get enough Beats Antique in New York. Come back soon, please!
I was happy to hear a blend of old, lighter favorites with some newer, more electro-heavy songs from their new album Elektrafone which is on sale here: www.beatsantique.com
These guys (and gal) are on to something big. Something over the top, progressive and universal. I think everyone should see them live at some point including my friends, coworkers, family (who I have had listen to the CD Tribal Derivations on multiple occasions at the dinner table)…. and YOU. If you can’t make it out to see them, photos are the next best thing. Look out below, you’re in for a tantalizing treat!
Watch their new music video for the song “Cat Skillz”:
And be sure not to miss their set at Camp Bisco this summer!!!
