Camp Bisco TOTD: Crywolf – “Rising, Rising”

Justin Taylor Phillips, also known as Crywolf, has earned the title as the most upcoming indie electronic producer in the past year. Hailing from Los Angeles, this producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist has gained a loyal fan base and support from international acts such as Bassnectar, Skrillex, and Ellie Goulding. Crywolf appeared on the scene three years ago, and since then has released three EPs that have reached the top of the Billboard charts with over 30 million plays across online streaming platforms. Crywolf produces intimate, melodic, avant-garde tracks that give his take on electronic music a special flavor.

“Rising, Rising” begins with a xylophone melody consisting of two different entities intermingling with a subtle guitar in the background that completes the dreamy mood. Uplifting vocals soothe the listener with what appears to be an intimate conversation. The voice reminds us that “you are home” which led me to think of the sense of community one feels while attending a music festival (i.e. Camp Bisco). “Rising, Rising” reminds us that sometimes “you can’t do this on your own” since there are others willing to aid your journey. Once the melody picks up the pace, there is an addition of strings and drums that emphasizes the feeling of rising.

The melody carries the listener’s soul which is rising to a place of acceptance. “Rising, Rising” empowers the individual with a soundtrack of encouragement. The middle of the track sounds like a soothing lullaby by accentuating the beautiful, ethereal male vocals. It is through the help of another that we are able to experience the opening of our mind and heart. After a moment of contemplation, the track ends with the rising of a driving bass and glitchy melody over a layer of serene vocals.

Crywolf will be joining The Disco Biscuits, Odesza, Big Grizmatik, RL Grime, STS9, Zeds Dead, and many more at Camp Bisco on Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pennsylvania on July 14-16. Purchase your tickets here and we’ll see you on the mountain.
