Camp Bisco TOTD: Tiga – “Don’t Break My Heart” (Shiba San Remix)
While living in Chicago, I have definitely become immersed in the house music scene. There are many different variations on the genre, and lately I have been playing Shiba San to get me ready for festy season. Hailing from Paris, Shiba San integrates old analog sound with the newest technology for a unique sound. Shiba San’s music is based off the deep house subgenre, but he pushes the boundaries to create intriguing rhythms that transport the listener. By receiving the Winter Music Conference’s “Best Underground Track” award in both 2014 and 2015, Shiba San has become known worldwide and shows no signs of slowing down.
“Don’t Break My Heart” begins with a pulsating rhythm that feels like a heart beating in our chest. Vocals repeat “don’t break” to a corresponding break beat which is the best instance of irony. Even from the initial introduction, I was hooked. The vocals finally reach “…my heart” once the chorus hits with all that is great about deep house music. A deep bass goes straight to the listener’s heart and spreads throughout the body — you just gotta move!
During the chorus, a woman calls to us from afar while futuristic sounds in the background intriguing the listener. Although unsure of our destination, Shiba San guides us on paths of audible excellence. Glitchy vocals saying, “Don’t break my heart,” bounce in correspondence to the deep bass of the chorus. The rhythm permeates the atmosphere for a full-body experience of deep house.
In the middle, Shiba San smooths out the vocals with futuristic sound effects. This experimentation emphasizes the mysterious and eerie atmosphere of the track. After a playful middle section, the chorus brings “Don’t Break My Heart” back to earth with glitchy vocals and a pulsating rhythm. The rhythm is a heartbeat that will always guide us back home.
Shiba San will be joining The Disco Biscuits, ODESZA, Big Grizmatik, Lotus, RL Grime, STS9, Zeds Dead, and many more at Camp Bisco on August 14-16. Tickets are still available here. Be on the lookout for another TOTD in a couple weeks!
