Camp Bisco XI Artist Spotlight: Nick Catchdubs & the Fool’s Gold Clubhouse
This year Camp Bisco is bringing in some serious talent with their curated label tents. Thursday features OWSLA, Friday brings us Ninja Tune artists and Saturday night the label tent will be transformed into the first ever Fool’s Gold Clubhouse. Fool’s Gold is a ridiculously diverse label known for melding electronic and hip-hop which has over time grown into a full-scale lifestyle brand – getting their fingers in retail, art shows and huge live events. Fool’s Gold, a Brooklyn-based record label came together in 2007 as the brainchild of A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs and his since rapidly expanded to host everyone from the Cool Kids to Kid Cudi to LA Riots.
Saturday night will be the first live festival edition of the Fool’s Gold Clubhouse, the counterpart to the series of free monthly releases featuring sets from JWLS, Codes, Nick Catchdubs, Mr. MFN eXquire, Craze and a set in the B.I.G. Tent from A-Trak. Let co-founder Nick Catchdubs give you a little background on the concept and what to expect from their crazy clubhouse Saturday night.
What was the thinking that inspired the Clubhouse tour and monthly releases?
For a while now, A-Trak and I have talked about doing FG festival stages. And in separate conversations, brainstorming different ways to get dance-centric releases out more quickly on the label. Once we came up with the CLUBHOUSE concept to tie everything together at once, it all fell into place very quickly. The artists are excited to be a part of the project, and the fans are excited to get more music. The unifying factor is just bringing the Fool’s Gold vibe to more people. The stage lineups and the music on the Clubhouse compilations all share a sense of fun and surprise. It’s stuff that is well-curated with a high level of quality control, but never takes itself too seriously.
Have any of Fool’s Gold performed or attended Camp Bisco before? How’d they like it?
There have definitely been FG performers at Bisco through the years (though this is MY first, as both performer and attendee). It’s crazy how many electronic music festivals there are around the world right now. But the one thing that’s always stood out to me about Bisco is that – much like Fool’s Gold as a label – it was started by artists because they wanted to do it themselves, and be free to play whatever they want with whomever they want. As big as the festival gets each year, that has always struck me as an important founding principle.
Camp Bisco is one huge, diverse party, how does Fool’s Gold plan to vibe with such an eclectic collection of people and musical tastes out in a field? What can Bisco attendees expect from the inaugural Clubhouse stage?
Ultimately, people pick up on how much fun we’re having and it’s contagious – genre doesn’t even come into the picture. We’re a pretty diverse label to begin with, but even then I think all the DJs and performers on our stage offer a little something for everyone. The stuff Codes plays is different from the stuff JWLS plays, which is different from the stuff that Craze plays, and what I play. Mr MFN Exquire is a rapper who’s energy and style onstage is totally unique. I’m excited that the Clubhouse stage connects the dots between all these artists.
Any artists’ Fool’s Gold is going to check out at Camp Bisco?
We’re going to be hanging at our stage all Saturday, but I’d like to try and catch some of the mainstage acts at the end of the night and see what their light shows are talking about. I’m looking forward to hanging out with the other artists more than anything else to be honest, we have a lot of friends playing the festival – Dillon Francis, Kill The Noise, Oliver, Star Eyes, and many more. It will be a fun one!
Make sure to check out the Fool’s Gold Clubhouse in the Label Tent Saturday with JWLS at 4:30PM, Codes at 5:45PM, Nick Catchdubs at 7PM, Mr. MFN eXuire at 8:15PM, Craze at 8:45 and A-Trak in the B.I.G. Tent somewhere around 1AM. Get the full Camp Bisco schedule here. See you there!
