Catskill Chill Artists Not To Miss: Super Groups
There is just a week until the Catskill Chill Music Festival and there really is no better way to close out the festival season. The summer is clinging on to those last rays of dwindling sunshine and autumn is poking its crisp façade into the Chill evening hours. Not too hot, not too cold, the weather is perfect for raging against the dying summer light.
Here is another installment in Sensible Reason’s ongoing coverage of artists not to miss at next week’s 3rd annual Chill. Instead of a specific artist, we’ll be focusing on categorical lists to provide you with more options. This edition focuses on the so-called super groups gracing the Chill. These monstrosities are pretty hit-or-miss in the mainstream, but the jam scene’s focus on improvisation usually lends itself to more organic collaboration.
Kung Fu – Friday 9:45pm-10:55pm, B Stage
Pretty much a band in its own right at this point, Kung Fu is still comprised of members better known for their work with other groups, most notably Tim Palmieri of The Breakfast and Todd Stoops of RAQ, on guitar and keys respectively. The funk fusion outfit is rounded out by Robert Somerville on tenor sax, Christopher DeAngelis on bass guitar, and Adrian Tramontano on drums.
Headtronics – Saturday, 7:00pm-7:55pm, B Stage
Flying somewhat under the radar, Headtronics joins Steve Molitz of Particle (also performing at the fest) with jam turntablist extraordinaire DJ Logic and loony low end live wire Freekbass. Infused with Logical breakbeats, thoroughly funky bass and spacey particular keyboard science, the trio has been tearing up stages across the country for the past year and change.
Kick Rocks – Sunday, 1:30am-3:00am, Main Stage
With but one performance under their collective belt, Kick Rocks have quickly become the stuff of legend, due in no small part to the presence of Jon “the Barber” Gutwillig on guitar and banter. Barber was joined by Clay Parnell of Brothers Past, Mike Greenfield of Lotus and Eli Winderman of Dopapod in a one-off VIP-only performance at Camp Bisco and as soon as the AUDs circulated, fans clamored for more tunes. This highly touted quartet will close out the weekend with a late Sunday/early Monday set. Check out the newly released SBDs HERE!
