Chatting Career Paths With Alan Walker At SAMF
Alan Walker is a tall young teen from Norway. When he was only 16, he created a song called “Faded” and it became an overnight sensation. Since the track’s instant success, he has been traveling the globe collaborating with the best in the business and selling out venues. We sat down with Walker at Spring Awakening Music Festival to see what he’s up to, as well as discuss his future as such a young artist in the music business.
SR: This is your first time at Spring Awakening, are you excited?
Alan Walker: Very excited. It’s crazy warm here!
SR: Not so warm in Norway? It is unseasonably hot today.
AW: If it got this hot in Norway, it would be a dangerous sign of global warming.
SR: What are other American festivals you plan to play this summer?
AW: I’m going to EDC, Firefly, and a few more.
SR: What are you most excited for?
AW: I guess EDC. I see a lot of artists talking about it on social media but I don’t really know what to expect. I’ve been to Vegas twice or so but I hear it’s going to be really really warm.
SR: It will be. But you can’t even experience Vegas to its full degree because you’re so young! You made “Faded” when you were 16. Do you plan on pursuing music from here on out?
AW: For the time being, yes, but you never know what direction life will take you. Hopefully, I’ll continue to do it for a while because I’m doing what I love and I really enjoy doing it.
SR: You’re doing great. Were you nervous to quit school?
AW: When I made “Faded” and it started to grow really fast it really got hard to combine school and music. It affected my grades as well. So, I discussed what I should do with the school, whether I should quit or not, and we decided to see where it goes and we ended up finally deciding I should stop for now.
SR: If it ever falls off, would you go back to school?
AW: I really want to go back because I think it’s really important to have the papers to fall back on.
SR: Not saying that you would, I’m a huge fan and think you’re extremely talented! What did your parents think about your sudden career choice?
AW: They’ve been really supportive, even with my idea to leave school. Even though was all very unexpected for everyone, they have all been very supportive.
SR: Do you have any siblings?
AW: Yeah, I have an older sister and a younger brother.
SR: Is there any sibling rivalry or jealousy that you get to tour the world and play music festivals?
AW: I hope not. Everyone is doing great.
SR: Are you staying in Chicago long?
AW: No, I’m actually playing LA later tonight.
SR: Wow. If you could stick around and see anyone at the festival, who would it be?
AW: Yeah, Diplo and Excision. I’ve seen Excisions set videos and his visuals look really cool.
SR: What inspires you?
AW: Movie soundtracks.
SR: Any particular movie?
SR: Who did the music for that movie?
AW: Hans Zimmer.
SR: What projects are in the works for you?
AW: I’ve got some new singles coming out, I just released one yesterday actually. It’s an instrumental song called “Sky” and I did it with a Danish guy called Alex Skrindo. It has been doing well, people seem to be responding well to it on social media. Other than that, I’ve got a few more tracks coming out soon.
SR: Will you be premiering any of these new tracks at EDC?
AW: I’m actually planning on playing a few here as well.
SR: Do you still make music under your old alias or are you 100% Alan Walker from now on?
AW: I do sometimes and I’ve been considering doing that but not yet. It would all happen very unofficially and I wouldn’t announce it to anyone, really. Just drop it and see who randomly sees it on my profile.
SR: Your whole persona is a little sinister, tell me more about it.
AW: It all started in the very beginning, we were talking about how to put my work out on social media. We discussed my interests and my image and that’s what we came up with, the hoodie and the mask. Obviously, I’m not wearing it today. I think it’s such a simple image yet stunning and I think people like it but it doesn’t cooperate with today.
SR: Yeah, way too hot for that today! Last question: What is the strangest piece of jewelry or oddest trinket you always carry with you?
AW: I got this bracelet from a fan actually, it says “I Am Not Alone.” It was totally random but I’ve been wearing it ever since.
SR: When did you get it?
AW: On my last US tour.
As promised, Alan Walker took the Solstice Stage at the festival and immediately brought smiles to the crowd. He teased “Faded” right out of the gates before dropping into a hard-hitting set with an Alan Walker twist. His new track “Tired” stood out as one of our faves. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for the future.
