City Bisco Moves To New York For 2016
Sensible Reason has become known for our extensive coverage on The Disco Biscuits. Hailing from Philadelphia, the band has been bringing “fresh biscuits to your door since 1995.” It’s quite likely you’ve heard of these four guys from Pennsylvania, since they have been showcasing their expertise in jamtronica for over twenty years. The Disco Biscuits show no signs of slowing down by constantly touring and hosting special events such as City Bisco and Camp Bisco. The culmination of drums, bass, guitar, keys, and vocals creates a unique experience for listeners and leaves them with what can only be described as bisco fever.
On August 18-20, The Disco Biscuits are returning to New York for this year’s City Bisco. Traditionally held in Pennsylvania, the three day concert run will be held at two separate locations in New York for 2016. The shows on the 18th & 19th will be held at Irving Plaza in Manhattan; however, the only way to gain entry into these shows is to purchase a three-day GA ticket. Click here to purchase! On the 20th, the band will be playing at the new Amphitheater on the Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn. Set to open in July, the semi-outdoor amphitheater has a capacity of 5,000 and the technology to adjust its construction in inclement weather. The 2016 edition of City Bisco is definitely an event not to be missed!
Swimming through an extensive discography can be difficult, but Sensible Reason is here to help you out with a biweekly City Bisco track of the day post. Our first installment features a live performance of “Abraxas.” Although The Disco Biscuits have numerous studio albums, let’s be honest — the best way to listen to these guys is live. Their SoundCloud account has dozens of live recordings straight from the soundboard. While sifting through a sea of musical splendor, I came across a version “Abraxas” from NYE 2014 recorded in New York. Attending a concert on New Year’s Eve is always special for the performers and the audience, and this recording of “Abraxas” shimmers with the luminescence of new beginnings.
The Disco Biscuits have become masters at developing a lengthy jam session that highlights all the various aspects of the band. “Abraxas” provides an excellent example of the ways in which the group experiments with meter, sound, and melody to bring their audience into a higher state of consciousness. It is in the Bisco atmosphere that we are able to find a sense of community and purpose. In short, seeing The Disco Biscuits live is pure bliss.
“Abraxas” begins with upbeat, bright, and high-energy keys and entrancing drums. The inclusion of some distortion gives the track a slightly eerie feel to an otherwise happy jam. A funky bass and grooving guitar gradually pick up the pace as if on a musical highway. The essence of jam bands is in full swing on “Abraxas” with playful experimentation and transcendent melodies. Drums mirror the guitar for a driving melody while the keys lead listeners on a musical journey much like travelling through a fractal.
Special events, such as City Bisco, always bring out the best in the performers. With a new location and dates, this year’s City Bisco is one not to be missed! Tickets are still available here. Stay tuned for more TOTDs and information on this unique opportunity to see The Disco Biscuits live.
