Damn Right! At The Blockley May 9th!
Electronic trio Damn Right! was founded in 2007 during an impromptu session at the 8×10 in Baltimore. The band has gone through a lot of changes since, and has had some seriously notable sit ins with them during their live performances from the likes of Aron Magner and Jon Gutwillig of the Disco Biscuits, Marco Benevento of the Benevento/Russo Duo, Billy Martin of Medeski Martin & Wood, DJ Logic, Clay Parnell of Brothers Past, Jesse Miller of Lotus, legendary drummer Johnny Rabb, and Bernie Worrell of P-Funk and The Talking Heads. Presently Damn Right! finds themselves as a Philadelphia based live/studio production trio that is making as many waves with their studio work as their live show. And its their roots in improv and experience gained through years of touring by founding members Tommy Bradel (drummer/producer/designer) and Johnny Fissinger (bassist/producer/vocals) mixed with the production wizardry of new addition FLOTE (instrumentalist/producer) that give their song writing and production such a unique sound. While pulling from the best parts of all of their influences, they keep a constant emphasis on capturing the free flowing emotion of live instrumentation. The band is bringing new energy to both the live and studio settings with their signature brand of nostalgia-drenched electronic composition that is sure to please fans of all circles. And thats exactly what Damn Right! is about.
Their live experience can be described as a spontaneous dance party with electronic breaks, 80’s influences and pop synths, hip hop samples, and infectious dance beats. Many of their songs include a transcendental synth riff with a seriously catchy and dance-infused electronic breakbeat hook with occasional womps and some popular vocal hip-hop samples including Biggie Smalls, Lil Wayne, and others. They have played at numerous festivals and always bring a proper dance party. Timing is a key element to Damn Right!’s composition of tracks which have changed slightly over time. Specifically, the band has moved in a more pop-infused direction with heavy drums which can be heard within tracks like “Summer In the 80’s” or “Hightops”. Every sound produced by this electronic duo is carefully and strategically placed with heavy emphasis on the buildup of the drums and bass.
On Thursday May 9th Damn Right! will be performing with the Godfather of Drum & Bass, LTJ Bukem and Philadelphia’s own Grimace Federation at the Blockley. LTJ Bukem is the stage name for British DnB pioneer, DJ Danny Williamson. With an extensive touring career under his belt stretching back to the early 90’s, and some serious electronic mastery, LTJ Bukem really knows how to throw down when it comes to a dance party. Bukem primarily focuses on drum and bass style music even though he started out as a classical pianist. He is viewed as one of the innovators in breakbeat, drum and bass, and hardcore rave music. His earlier music is more breakbeat hardcore influences while his drum and bass today is a bit more laid back and pays much homage to jazz which I personally prefer.
This show is sure to be a dance party and is not one to miss, so buy Tickets here!
