Darth Vader Denied Bid For Ukrainian Presidency
…No, you’ve read the title of this article correctly. As the Ukraine heads steadily toward its long-awaited presidential elections, slated for the 25th of May with currently twenty-three candidates registered to run, a select few have been weeded out of the race — including the mastermind behind the Death Star. Unfortunately, Darth Vader — who actually happens to be an electrician by the name of Viktor Shevchenko, nominated by the Internet Party of Ukraine — will not be one of the few allowed to campaign. Shevchenko, while paying the hefty deposit application fee, has been seen dressed up as the Star Wars character in public, and has clearly committed to this political persona.
The Central Electoral Commission reviewed Vader’s application and ultimately denied him, finding problematic issues with the paperwork provided. But the bigger question is: What was the purpose of this stunt? Some suggest that the public display was meant to treat the upcoming elections in Ukraine as farce by oppositional parties and their Russian supporters, who would go so far as to discredit the interim government’s legitimacy by supporting the platform of fictional characters.
While the Ukraine has endured a very chaotic year, culminating in the removal of former President Viktor Yanukovych, it remains to be seen whether or not replacing one oppressor with a galactic counterpart would have been the best idea.
