Dirty Chime Releases Smooth New Single “Fifty One Fifty”
Just in time for the hazy end of summer Los Angeles based electronic-pop artist Dirty Chime has made a late entry for one of the best tracks of the season. Dripping with hip-hop and r&b elements, “Fifty One Fifty” is a smooth jam that fuses cutting edge and old-school production with swagger. Fuzzy synths overlay perfectly as a kick-push bed of percussion evokes a nostalgic sense of golden age hip-hop. Dirty Chime’s infectious lyrics and velvety vocals showcase his musicianship and considerable vocal range while also creating an atmospheric listening experience.
“Fifty One Fifty” aka 5150 refers to the California law code for the temporary, involuntary psychiatric commitment of individuals who present a danger to themselves or others due to signs of mental illness. It has been more generally applied to people who are considered threateningly unstable or “crazy.”
Dirty Chime is the brainchild of solo artist Thomas Clayton, who writes his contemplative lyrics from personal experiences that touch on sensitive subjects such as mental health, medicating/over-medicating and escapism. This soulful indie tune marries electronic pop with R&B in a refreshing and inventive way. The cascading layers of sublime keyboards and vocals are balanced well with multiple harmony backups, catchy bass grooves and a slight hip-hop-influenced edge.
