Do Valentine’s Day Better With This Heart-Opening Yoga Playlist
I have never been a Valentine’s Day person. I don’t get it. It seems like a pretty lame holiday to me. I am not cynical or bitter about love. I enjoy love. I love love in all of its many ways, shapes and forms! I just do not feel comfortable with the idea that to love someone means to shove a cheesy card in an envelope to be presented once a year alongside a box of chocolates and maybe some flowers, if you’re lucky. And yeah, I know, “…but St. Valentine and secret marriages and stuff…” and that is all well and good, but again, what exactly does that have to do with heart shaped candy and forced dinner dates?
That being said, I am not suggesting that Valentine’s Day should be ignored or done away with, but rather that it be celebrated better, with more fervor and reverence for real, authentic love. What would Valentine’s Day look like if instead of spending $4 on a Hallmark card we bought a bottle of water and a breakfast sandwich for the homeless guy down the road, and offered a listening ear for his or her stories? How much more Love could be shared if instead of rushing around with our face in our phones trying to make last minute dinner arrangements, we made a conscious effort to smile at people we walked by on the sidewalk or in the halls at work or school? What if we made it our intention to be Love not just on February 14th, but in all that we do every day?
So this year, in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day, whenever I step onto my yoga mat I am going to dedicate my practice to cultivating love in places where I feel fear, self-consciousness, hatred, or ambivalence. I will meditate on manifesting authentic ‘loving-kindness’ that I can carry with me and call upon in times when I am not feeling particularly loving or kind. The thing about love is that the more you give it away, the more it comes back. The more you love the more you love!
In the spirit of loving and giving and sharing this Valentine’s Day, I cooked up a little playlist that I will be yoga-ing to this week. This Love and Light yoga playlist is filled with pretty instrumentals, uplifting lyrics, and joyful beats to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Whether you plan on joining me in some heart-opening asanas, or just cranking it up in the car to help hold back the road rage during a traffic jam, I hope these tunes bring a little extra love and light to your day.
