Dumpstaphunk Brings The Phunk To BK Bowl 3/23!
The OGs of New Orleans funk, Dumpstaphunk, return to Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday, March 23rd for what is sure to be a phunky time! I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Dumpstaphunk several times, and they never disappoint. It’s the kind of show that fans of any genre can enjoy, but definitely not to be missed by true fans of the funk.
The name “Neville” is iconic of NOLA funk, so it’s no surprise that Ivan Neville’s serendipitous accident has found a home at the forefront of the NOLA funk scene. What started as Ivan needing backup for a Jazz Fest solo show and calling in friends and family to help has since become one of the most well-known names of its genre. Dumpstaphunk is currently comprised of Ivan, his cousin Ian on guitar, Tony Hall on bass guitar, Nick Daniels on double bass and Nikki Glaspie on drums. These guys (and girl) play dirty together and rock out hard with an upbeat, funky (why are there no effective synonyms for “funky”?!) vibe that really gets the crowd going. I was fortunate enough to catch their set at Equifunk this past summer, and what a rager that was! Though I was presumably amongst the minority who was very familiar with them, EVERYONE had a blast.
In case you’re not convinced yet, they’ll be joined by another awesome group, The London Souls, who absolutely kill it. I caught the Souls last night opening for night five of Bowlive, having little prior knowledge of them, and was VERY impressed. They’re an NYC-based rock band with a powerful and unique sound that is definitely going places.
