EDM Digest: Volume 3
Bringing SR top-flight mixes and singles from the world of EDM every week
Since spring is right on our collective doorstep, I wanted to start off this digest with something that has “Miami pool party” scrawled all over it. Look no further than Jamie Jones’ remix of Ej’s Mama, I’m Gonna Sing. The man hardly needs introduction; RA rated #1 DJ in the world for 2011, co-owner of the do-no-wrong Hot Natured record label and one of the hardest working men in the business. The fact that tracks are now described as having the “Hot Natured sound” is a testament to the impact Jones and label mate Less Foss have had on the EDM world. Jones started playing this track in his sets as early as a couple of months ago, but it was just released to the public a week or so ago. The song itself is a tale of two halves: the first is deep and menacing, punctuated by shaking hi-hats and flurries of synth pokes. The second half, around the 3:40 mark or so, absolutely blossoms with help from a shimmery chord progression layered over top. Masterful stuff.
Keeping with the spring/summer vibe, here’s a great little track from minimal house aficionado Lawrence. Best known for producing some of the best meditative and exploratory house in the world, Lawrence (or Sten) is widely renowned for his ability to capture moods and paint emotions with his tracks. Here, Lawrence elevates a simple 4/4 beat with layers of gorgeous piano and a thudding bassline. Enjoy on a dock somewhere, preferably with a lady in tow.
Next up, a mix from an artist that has quickly become one of my must-listen’s every time I see his name attached to a track: Maxxi Soundsystem. I’m not sure I’ve disliked even one of his remixes (his remix of Parallel Dance Ensemble’s Shopping Cart has been everywhere), and the dude has an absolute style all his own. Equal parts deep house and soul, the UK native’s sound is fresh and adventurous – he’s just as willing to go deep and bass-centric as he is to go poppy and expressive. The combination is a swinging, deliriously fun take on house that is immensely re-listenable. This mix has been on constant repeat and I can’t get enough. Enjoy.
What’s summer without disco? Nothing I tell you! In light of this law of nature, here’s a lean and mean mix from the UK’s Crystal Fighters. For all of you jamtronica fans out there, these guys are a full band and have one of the “single most exciting show[s] in dance music” according to Mixmag. Their first album, Star of Love, was critically acclaimed and universally adored, earning them a record deal with Atlantic. Having just finished a sold-out headlining tour in the UK and Europe, and with an upcoming U.S. tour that includes pit stops at SXSW Festival, New York City, San Francisco and LA, expect big things from Crystal Fighters in 2012.
Last but not least, a smoldering new release off Crosstown Rebels’ (go figure) new signees Fur Coat. These guys don’t have much of a catalogue to speak of yet, but everything that’s come out from them has been stellar. This original track, You & I, is a hazy and drug-fueled romp that speaks to the warehouse raver in all of us. The vocal track by Cari Golden is perfect – seductive and sweet with just the right touch of subtle menace. Late night listening for sure.
