End The Summer With Rifflandia Festival!
For the past eight years Rifflandia Festival has brought artists from all over to congregate in British Columbia’s capital city of Victoria for four days of amazing talent and sound. Put on by Atomique Productions, the event is held over four days at 18 different venues within the Downtown Victoria area which makes it an excellent choice for local music lovers who enjoy sleeping in the comfort of their own beds. The festival begins on Thursday, September 17th and runs until Sunday, September 20th.
The venue list is a mixture of all-ages and 19+ spaces such as The Royal Athletic Park, Phillips Backyard, Wolf Sheep, and the Metro Theatre. With Phillips Brewery and Merridale Cider supplying parched adult patrons and PK Sound delivering crisp sound, how can Victoria’s end-of-summer party get any better? This year Phillips has even created its own beer for this special occasion: Rifflandabrau.
This year’s headliners include an eclectic array of musical talents such as Modest Mouse, Chromeo, Mother Mother, Tokyo Police Club, Joey Bada$$, Arkells, Julian Casablancas + The Voidz and Kiesza. At this year’s event you will hear all types of music ranging from hip-hop, indie, electro-funk and house to rock and soul music. Although I was disappointed at the lack of headlining spots filled by acclaimed DJ acts, I was ecstatic to see Victoria’s own Illvis Freshly, Mr. Moe, J-Feud and DJ Shrew plus one of my favourite BC duos Wood’n’Soo, as well as Longwalkshortdock and Mat the Alien on the roster. When it comes to headlining acts, I am looking forward to hearing The Humans lay down a live set of indie-electronica and for Chromeo to fill my ears with synth-infused, 80’s inspired dance music. To read more about which artists are playing at this year’s festival check out their lineup.
Another great thing about Rifflandia? The themes! Friday’s theme is “Fruit Salad” so I can’t wait to see the array of banana costumes, pineapples and other fruits scattered around the festival grounds. Saturday’s theme is “Caturday” so I’ll be sure to wear my finest leopard print and Sunday is Sun-Dye (Tie-Dye) which is something I’ll have to work on acquiring.
Rifflandia encourages people of all ages to come and enjoy their favourite artists and experience new genres, while discovering new musical acts all together. Thursday’s events begin at 8PM and run until 2AM while Friday through Sunday offers a more family friendly option. The daytime festivities begin at 3PM on Friday in the Royal Athletic Park, Saturday and Sunday shows begin at 12:30PM and go until approximately 8:30/9PM. On Friday/Saturday the nighttime venues open their doors at approximately 10PM.
Tickets are still available for purchase, Super Passes will give you access to the Royal Athletic Park and the night stages and currently cost $165 CA plus service fees. The VIP pass is currently on sale for $295 + S/C, Park Passes will run you $125 + S/C for three days and the night passes are $65 + S/C for three nights of music. There are other options available as well, so for more details about purchasing tickets click here.
I cannot wait to pack my bag full of fabulous festival gear — like ridiculous sunglasses, costume-appropriate accessories and my notepad — for this event that is sure to leave me breathless, burnt and satisfied. I’ll be sure to do my stretches before hitting this festival hard starting Thursday night at one of Rifflandia’s many venues: Capital Iron! Come join me.
