Envision yourself in a tropical paradise: splashing in the warm waves of a sandy oasis, hiking through lush jungles while accompanied by howler monkeys swinging overhead, and absorbing the day’s last rays of sunshine as your panoramic view of the skyline shifts from vibrant crimson to an enchanting indigo, bespeckled with glittering stars. Now pair this idyllic reverie with a ‘mix of conscious people from around the globe, gathered to share an elevated experience of culture, spirit and community.’ The marriage of raw nature and conscious community is precisely the scenario the producers of the Envision Art, Music and Sacred Movement Festival have created in Bahia Ballena, on the southern coast of Costa Rica. This weekend—March 1-4, 2012—the Envision crew invites one and all to ‘come dance, play, celebrate, love, learn, teach, co-create, co-conspire and transform our consciousness and our world!’
The concept for the festival began in 2009 as a “collective brainchild, a dream fulfilled for an eclectic group of partners who had been individually manifesting the intention for a long time. The idea developed from a collaboration of ‘visions’ from each partner. The team conceptualized a gathering that was not only musically diverse, but community oriented, environmentally conscious, sustainable, educational, inspiring and holistically enriching. The name seemed to encompass all of these components that express the group’s values in one simple word.”
For all intents and purposes, Envision Festival 2011 was a fully realized actualization of the partner’s collective aspirations. “An incredible line-up of local and international music, the various educational workshops and complete cultural emersion were unforgettable. To top it all off, the fact that the Envision community developed a recycling program within the town of Dominical is a defining point of pride. The organization was able to stand by its mission and goals, all while having an amazing time doing so. On the point of the recycling endeavor, the team was able to come away feeling like a community was helped in the process of producing a large-scale event, as opposed to being taking advantage of. It remains is a definite highlight from last year.”
Now in its second year, Envision has remained true to it’s grassroots start-up mentality, while successfully undertaking the logistical complexities of planning an international event. Fortunately for the producers, half of their team resides in Costa Rica and are able to “facilitate many of the tasks that need to be managed on the ground, such as land use agreements, permitting and municipality approval. Such enterprises would be nearly impossible to accomplish from afar. The remote and raw nature of how the festival is executed from year to year makes it very challenging, yet rewarding at the same time. It’s an amazing adventure and everyone learns something new every day…and to be honest, that’s half the fun!”
Envision Festival 2012 promises to be nothing short of spectacular, boasting an impressive line-up that “has been very appealing to a large international demographic, as well as the local community.” With acts such as Beats Antique, Random Rab, Opiuo, Gaudi and Octopus Nebula, there is sure to be something appealing to any music lover. The experience will also be enhanced by multi-sensory stimulation, including performances by Lucent Dossier Experience, aerialist Krystaal Rain and hoop dancer KiT; installations by The DoLaB and Temple of Visions; and visual artists Marc Henson, Carey Thompson and Krystleze.
The bounty of Costa Rica possesses many splendors, many of which will be accessible to the Envision community. “The new venue at Whales Tail National Park, in Uvita, is absolutely breathtaking! It is one of the most biologically diverse places on earth, with endless adventures around each corner.” Attendees may choose to participate in scuba diving, ocean kayaking, surfing (and surf lessons!) or mountain biking. For an up close and personal experience with the natural environment, an abundance of tours will be readily available, including waterfall and cave tours, canopy tours, and whale watching expeditions.
The Envision partners stand firm in their commitment to developing the capacity for conscious community growth, while continually promoting eco-awareness. Workshop titles such as ‘Psychedelic Science in the 21st Century,’ ‘Intuitive Vocal Toning & Sacred Geometry Sound Healing’ and ‘Conscious Connections’ offer Envision attendees the opportunity learn from one another, and co-create sacred space on the shore of Costa Rica, all in the hopes of sharing those experiences with others upon their return home. Festival co-founders take a hands-on approach with the interactive forums, leading groups such as ‘Way of the Graceful Warrior Yoga’ with Sophia Thom and ‘Intro to Permaculture’ with Stephen Brooks. Envision initiatives also include the local community by partnering with Community Carbon Trees-Costa Rica—an organization committed to planting trees for reforestation and developing sound practices of land stewardship—and affirm the contribution of a percentage of all ticket sales to support the cause.
The breadth and multitude of cultural, consciousness and community engagements that are inherent in the Envision philosophy of operation are also what set it apart from other festivals around the globe. Envision Festival’s “bohemian beachside setting, the amazing array of talented artists and musicians, as well as easy accessibility from the outside world are all aspects that, together, are hard to find—in the same place—anywhere else in the world. The variety of activities offered, the amazing raw nature of Costa Rica, and beautiful culture supplement the uniqueness of Envision festival. The adventure stretches far beyond the music, workshops and installations, as the Envision team has put great effort into blazing new trails and bringing something fresh to the festival scene.”
