Equifunk Announces Final Round of Headliners & All-New Sunday Series
Big news coming from Team Equifunk over the past week! It’s the kind of news that, will have you running for Equinunk, PA the weekend of August 16 if you weren’t already planning on making the trip.
Last week, the great people of Equifunk announced that the (supposed) final headliner for this year’s festival will be no other than Soulive with the Shady Horns, along with special guest Maceo Parker. Soulive alone would have been impressive enough, but add to that the Shady Horns and the epic Maceo Parker and the only word that comes to mind is “WOW!” The announcement that Parker, legendary funk and jazz saxophonist who made a name for himself working with James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic in the ‘60s and ‘70s, would perform with Soulive was like completing an already deliciously funky ice cream sundae with the most soulfully juicy cherry imaginable.
At least…we thought the Equifunk sundae was complete at that point…but, to our utterly ecstatic surprise, we were wrong. Today, Equifunk made two huge announcements about the scope and scale of the festival for its sixth year running.
In previous years, music has happened only on Friday and Saturday night. Sunday morning meant being awakened by bullhorn announcements “lightly” encouraging us all (in a very humorous way) to get the hell out. This year, however, Sunday will mean a whole additional day and night of music. For the first time in its five-year history, Equifunk is introducing its Sunday Series of music, and festival-goers will be able to remain on the grounds until Monday morning. Although the all-inclusive meals will end on Sunday morning with breakfast, the powers that be have made it clear we won’t go hungry, announcing on their website that there will be “plenty of food and drink options available for purchase on the cheap all day and night.”
Imagine the round-table discussion that followed the decision to add an extra day and night of funktacular goodness to their 2013 plans. Who do you ask to headline the final night when you already have Soulive performing with one of the best saxophone players of all time, in addition to Keller Williams with More Than A Little, JJ Grey & Mofro, The Nigel Hall Band, and Marco Benevento (just to name a few)? Well, you could throw us all a curve ball and get the closest thing to Phish humanly possible for a festival of this scale. Yes, Equifunk has announced that Pork Tornado, the comedic blues rock side project of Phish’s drummer Jon Fishman and their record producer Dan Archer, will be headlining on Sunday night. For more information on the recently added headliners, and the first-ever Sunday Series, take a look at Equifunk’s website here.
And now, I dare you to try wrapping your head around the number of insanely talented musicians who will be performing on the grounds of Camp Equinunk this year. It very well might result in mind explosion. Please excuse me while I scrape the remnants of my brain off the walls and attempt to put them back inside my head….
