Equifunk Artist Spotlight: Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk
Who’s ready to get phunky this weekend at Equifunk, the all-inclusive music festival going down at Camp Equinunk in the Poconos? Personally I can’t wait to see Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk throw down Friday night on the main stage. These New Orleans natives will certainly feed all our souls with that jazzy funk that is so emblematic of my favorite city in the world. Anyone who’s been down to NOLA knows “what it means to miss New Orleans,” and I’m sure all my fellow recent Tulane grads have been fiending for a lil NOLA in their lives just as much as I have.
Dubbed by The New York Times as “the best funk band from New Orleans right now,” Dumpstaphunk is the product of Aaron Neville’s son Ivan and a serendipitous accident. The jazz legend’s protégé needed some backup for a solo gig he was set to do at Jazz Fest back in ’03 and called in reinforcements: his cousin Ian Neville on guitar, bassists Nick Daniels and Tony Hall, and Raymond Weber on the drums. The crowd was so impressed that the crew reached instant local fame and proceeded to become a nation-wide sensation, now a highlight at festivals from Bonnaroo to High Sierra. Their debut EP, “Listen Hear,” was best described by Jam Base as “straight-ahead inner city funk for the masses.” To me, this simply translates as New Orleans gone national.
Members of the band have earned a reputation amongst the greats and have recorded and performed with the Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews, Bonnie Raitt, John Mayer, and Trey Anastasio, as well as many others.
Catch Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk this Friday evening at Equifunk in what promises to be a jammin’, NOLAlicious performance that you do not want to miss!
