Win 2 Tickets: Evian Christ & Dutch E Germ at Output!
2013 proved to be a good year for both UK producer Evian Christ and local New York City producer Dutch E Germ, as both shared spotlights in Kanye West’s 2013 opus, Yeezus. Evian, born 25 year old Joshua Leary, started off his rise with a series of releases for TriAngle, an acclaimed underground label promoting works by artists riding the boundary between R&B, experimental techno, and other forms of electronic music. Now sharing the label with AlunaGeorge, Forest Swords, Holy Other, Vessel, and other up and coming artists, Evian Christ helped pull these artists to further recognition through his production of Kanye’s “I’m In It.” Now signed to Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Beats, Evian has enjoyed the meteoric rise indie producers such as Hudson Mohawke have taken thanks to Kanye’s keen ear for fresh beats.
The producers of Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, hot off Evian Christ’s last appearance in New York City for this past November’s festival, are giving those who missed this dark hip hop producer a second chance to catch him teasing the city, this time between Output’s speaker stacks. Since then, Evian has released a new EP on TriAngle, Waterfall, and it has come to light that Evian is working with Kanye again on his yet-to-be-named upcoming release. Evian Christ combines dark foreboding bass with a four to the floor kick reminiscent of some of Pinch or Shackleton’s recent work, but with added hip hop lyrics and menace.
Along with Evian Christ, Dutch E Germ’s track “HBA War” provided a key sample to Yeezus’ provocative track “New Slaves.” Born Tim DeWit, Dutch E Germ has early roots in the DC punk scene, and is credited with being a founding member of New York City-based experimental band Gang Gang Dance. After being the victim of a near-fatal robbery, Tim took time off from GGD and began to develop his own project, Dutch E Germ. A familiar presence in the NYC underground music scene, Dutch E Germ has contributed to the famous Ghe2o G0th1k parties, remixed Fatima al Qadiri, created the sound design for fashion line Hood By Air’s runway shows, and most recently, released his own full length LP on UNO NYC caked IN.RAK.DUST. Dutch E Germ already has a more complete musical resume than most musicians his age, and his rise through the NY underground is still just leaving its infancy.
With these two artists sharing the decks on June 25th at Output, come and take a look at the productions that earned these artists a spot in Kanye’s legacy. You won’t leave disappointed, and may get a glimpse into what the future of rap music will be influenced by. Tickets for this Wednesday evening show are available via Ticketfly.
