[Exclusive Interview] Dannic on His Marketing Past, New Music with Merk & Kremont, and Love for His Tour Mates
Last week, I was lucky enough to catch up with one-third of the Revealed Recordings infamous trio, Daan Romers, better know to his fans as Dannic, after he played an incredible opening set in Boston as part of the North American Bus Tour. Hailing from Tiesto and Hardwell‘s hometown of Breda, Dannic has displayed an unparalleled level of energy and passion throughout his rise up the charts in the dance music scene. Dannic let us in on the family that is Revealed Recordings, his past in marketing and reason for quitting his job, and even teased a new song with Italian duo, Merk & Kremont.
Sensible Reason: What has been the most memorable part of this second annual Revealed Recordings North American bus tour so far?
Dannic: To be honest, it’s really hard to think of a favorite show or memorable thing, because the whole tour has been amazing. Every show is sold out. Every show is amazing; the crowd is super energetic, and they all know us, and they know our songs. We get a little bit spoiled. But the most memorable thing is just us three doing it together.
SR: It’s really great that you’re all so close!
Dannic: Yeah, we miss each other a lot because we have our own careers, and don’t see each other that often. We’re best friends, and that’s the best part, doing it together.
SR: (fan question) How was playing your tour opener in Minneapolis, presented by Sound in Motion? What made this show special?
Dannic: That was great. That was the best kick-off of the tour. Literally, when I got off stage I was sweating all over, and that’s always a good sign.
SR: Do you have any pre-performance rituals?
Dannic: I’m always, always working on music. So, whenever I’m in the hotel room, I’m always checking for new music and seeing if I missed something in my set that I can edit. I’m just working on new music all the time, so that’s something I always do. AND we always drink a couple beers…just a couple. [laughs]
SR: What is your biggest artist goal in 2014, may it be artist collaboration, album plans, or dream venue/festival to play at?
Dannic: Oh wow. That’s a difficult one. I think in general, one of my goals is to collaborate with Fedde le Grand; he’s one of my big idols. I’m very confident right now, so I think that this year, that’s something that’s going to happen.
SR: Who do you think are up-and-coming artists at the moment? Why do you think this?
Dannic: I just did a collaboration with Merk & Kremont. They’re from Italy and they’re super nice guys. That song is going to be released the 29th of April. They are IT this year. They make progressive house but still it’s still groovy, and that’s something I always like to do. Definitely a group to look out for.
SR: You’ve compared the people involved in Revealed Recordings to that of a family. How important has that atmosphere been in your rising career?
Dannic: I think that it’s super important for me. I met Robbert, Hardwell, nine years ago; we’ve been best friends since then, so it was really natural. We send each other everything, and I think that’s really important. People even call us the “Dutch House Mafia” nowadays because we’re so close, and people can see that. We’re not, like, competitive with each other; it’s a team. I have my own style; Dyro has his own style; Robbert has his own style. Yeah, I think it’s really important to have that, and we help each other a lot with our music, and also in our personal lives. I think it’s super important.
SR: If you weren’t producing and DJing, what would you be doing instead?
Dannic: I would be a marketing manager. I actually worked for three years as a marketing manager in my hometown for a company that sells LED systems. It was pretty cool. Actually, Robbert was the one who told me, “Off that desk, quit your job, and go for it!”. And my family was super supportive of my music.
SR: In closing, what is something no one knows about Dyro and Hardwell?
Dannic: That they’re actually super dedicated and super nice guys! I mean, everyone always looks up to us like, “Oh look, it’s Dyro!”, and, “Oh my god, there’s Hardwell!”. But they’re just genuine, normal, regular guys who just live their dreams. That’s something people always forget. We’re just normal guys.
