Free Music Friday: FiKus Edition
We were inspired to write this song during the 2008 olympics when Michael Phelps dominated the games and won 8 gold medals in Beijing. Hence the only lyrics in the song, “winning the gold!” Since debuting the song live it has become an anthem for the band. It is also a great vehicle for us to explore. This version in particular is from our August visit to Ithaca, NY. They have a lot of love for us and we sure have a lot for them. We think its a great version that any FiKus fan would enjoy.
Kito Bovenschulte (drums/vocals):
I was scrolling through my iPod the other day looking for music I hadn’t listened to in a long time. I came across Green Day and the American Idiot album and remembered it being a huge hit for me as a little kid. I was in 7th grade when it came out in 2004, also the same year I got my first drum kit. I used to sit in my basement for hours playing the drums along to my favorite CDs of the likes of Rush, Ozzy Osbourne, Dream Theater, and this album was one of them. After not having listened to it in about ten years, I was very receptive to the political statement it makes and the awesomely blatant Fuck You Bush agenda I was not so much able to understand as a kid. A lot of it really hit home with the current global state of affairs which was cool to hear.
“Wolf Eyes” is one of my favorite artists. This is a live performance of “Ancient Delay>Black Vomit”.Both songs are off their LP “Burned Mind” released via Sub Pop Records.“Burned Mind” may be my favorite record of all time. This video was recorded live in NYC at No Fun Fest.
When I was a kid (7th, 8th grade), this was my “GET PUMPED” jam. 2:33 is this this NASTY peak. A little different than what most kids were listening to, but man I love this stuff!
A song I remember my mom playing all the time when I was very young, done by one of my favorite bands. A very bad ass version indeed.
For Christmas one year my grandma gave me Hendrix’s “Ultimate Experience,” album. Fast forward about six months and I have my first guitar, a Fender Stratocaster and Purple Haze is the first song I try and tackle.
