Gentoo Creates Ethereal Bliss With ‘Structures’
If you are in need of a healthy dose of IDM, then look no further than the experimental electronic band, Gentoo. Gentoo is the brainchild of electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist Damon Kelly, and this exciting group has put together a stunning new album. On Structures, Kelly used live drums, guitar, and bass creating a rich, and enchanting mixture of live and electronic production. Structures still embraces Gentoo’s trademark minimalism, slow arching waveforms, and transcendental vocals that invite us to explore our own perceived universe.
Gentoo’s ethereal and atmospheric production swaddles you in a cocoon of sonic bliss. The enveloping synths of the album’s opening track “This is as far as we go,” sets a perfect tone for what is to come. Instantaneously we can feel Gentoo’s refined and considered approach to production. “Listen” evokes a sense of wonder as lush percussion pairs perfectly with Gentoo’s trademark minimalist style. Gentoo takes a jazzy almost funky approach to the track “Strings” while “Libra” beams with upbeat and infectious energy. The album’s title track perfectly exemplifies Gentoo’s delicate and meditative style. The elegant soundscapes that this band is able to create are truly breathtaking. This is the type of music you can bump in your headphones and simply lose yourself to. “Oslo” brings this album to a shimmering conclusion. ominous vocal samples pair supremely with Gentoo’s slick and sophisticated musicianship. With a background in photography and literature, Damon Kelly spends a good deal of time exploring the way we interact with the physical space in our lives, and finding places where we can shield ourselves from the sonic clutter of living in a society of sensory overload.
