Getting to Know Nightly (Night, love you)
Nashville-based cousins Jonathan Capeci and Joey Beretta AKA Nightly have had a busy couple of years. Following the release of their debut honest EP, these two have headlined a tour and supported the likes of The Night Game, The Struts, and K.Flay. Their latest video has reached over 7 million views on Youtube, and they are officially on the first leg of a tour supporting rapper NF on is Perception World Tour. We had a chance to ask the guys of Nightly (which stands for Night, love you in text speak) to get to know a bit about their journey and experience in the music business.
Sensible Reason: You two have been thinking about making music together for some time. Tell us about your creative process when you were younger vs. now that you have something more established.
Nightly: I think the biggest difference is just knowing what we want and how to get there more efficiently. When you work with someone for so long you learn how to communicate better. When we’re writing it’s a more fluid process than when we were younger and trying to figure everything out.
SR: You have always known you two were going to make music together. As relatives, has there ever been any kind of rivalry between you two?
Nightly: Definitely no rivalry. We’re on the same team and want the same things. Our tastes and opinions can differ, but that’s normal for anyone. Communication is key.
SR: You two both dropped out of school to pursue music. What would you have studied/what career path would you be on if music never came into focus?
Nightly: I always thought it’d be cool to own a Christmas tree farm.
SR: How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?
Nightly: We usually say alt-pop.
SR: You grew up on the East coast and got your big break in Nashville, where do you think is the best place for aspiring musicians?
Nightly: I honestly don’t think it matters where you’re from, especially in this day and age. With the internet, you really have all the resources you need to release music and build a following. One thing I do like about Nashville and LA is that you’re surrounded by a lot of talented people, and that can help drive you to be better.
SR: Does the online community play a bigger role than physical location?
Nightly: Online is definitely important, but so is playing live and building a real fan base. There’s not any substitute for that.
SR: At what moment did you realize you were doing something bigger than what you had originally planned? Or is that moment yet to come?
Nightly: We’re just making music that we love and that means something to us. We’re always floored when we see it reaching and impacting other people, no matter how many.
SR: Tell us about your current tour. How did you link up with NF?
Nightly: The tour with NF has been incredible so far. We’re super grateful to Nate and his entire team. We submitted for the tour through our agent, which is how we were connected.
SR: What has been the scariest part of doing music full time?
Nightly: There are a lot of ups and downs. You don’t always know what is coming next or how people will react to what you’re doing, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
SR: Your songs are often intimate and about relationships. What has been the most vulnerable track for each of you?
Nightly: They really kinda all are, but if I had to choose from the EP that was the most vulnerable, it’d probably be No Vacancy or xo. both are truthful and blunt, even when the truth isn’t very flattering.
SR: You’ve worked with top producers and have a great label backing you. What artists do you wish to collaborate with in the future?
Nightly: There are lots that would be super cool. I think either doing a chorus with a rapper or a duet with a female artist would make sense for us and be fun. For a rapper, I’d pick Kendrick [Lamar] probably, and female we’d pick Rihanna.
SR: Tell us about what’s in store for the future. What tracks/EPs will you be releasing in 2018?
Nightly: I can’t tell you exactly what we’re releasing yet, but we will be putting out more music, and very soon. besides that, more touring, and a few other surprises.
