#GLOBEWANDERS Dance Party Blends Music & Travel Into One
This Friday, January 23, from 7:30-11pm at the Hudson Hotel’s Half & Half, music lovers and globetrotters have the change to mix and mingle at the new #GLOBEWANDERS event. This free event is sure to get your international booty moving, featuring the global dance and tropical bass DJ Geko Jones, who is known in NYC music circuits for spinning at the wildly popular Que Bajo?! parties. Additionally, the event will feature capoeira dancers from local group Cadny.org. (According to Wikipedia, “Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game.”) And don’t forget free drinks for the first hour of the party, sponsored by Montelobos Mezcal! Lyft will also be sponsoring discounted rides for Friday’s party with a special code that will be shared with RSVP’s!
#GLOBEWANDERS brings together innovators and appreciators of world travel, world dance music, and world culture and is co-sponsored by 22 organizations that are passionate about music and travel, such as: Dubspot, Mi Casa Holiday, #NMDN Alternative travel conference, Turntable Lab, Journy, Sparkplug, NY MusicTech, Travel 2.0, Travel Massive NYC, and Fantrotter. The party is also an unofficial afterparty to the 2015 New York Times Travel Show, an expo hosted by the NYT to help travelers gain insight on valuable travel tips at seminars hosted by experts in the field and to help travel industry experts discover new domestic and international hot spots, familiar favorites and under-the radar crowd-free escapes.
“I originally wanted to find a fun way to bridge my work in music to my new work in travel,” notes #GLOBEWANDERS founder Mita Carriman, a music/entertainment lawyer from NYC and newly turned travel-tech entrepreneur. “The more I kept thinking about bringing these two industries together for a party, was the more enthusiasm I heard echoed from people I shared the idea with. Travel and music are largely celebrated industries by consumers, and I thought it would be both cool and beneficial to bring these industries together and see how we can learn and grow with each other.”
#GLOBEWANDERS is from 7:30pm to 11pm at the Hudson Hotel’s Half & Half, 21+ only, and free with RSVP subject to venue capacity. Complimentary drinks in the first hour of the event are provided by Montelobos Mezcal. For more information and to RSVP, visit www.globewanders.com. Also, check out the Facebook event page here!
About the Venue
From the Half & Half website: Half & Half is an arcade & dance hall at the legendary Hudson Hotel. Casual, fun, and inclusive, Half & Half is inspired by the early 1980’s art & music scene of downtown Manhattan when nightlife was designed by the likes of Haring, Warhol or Basquiat, Half & Half, is centered around rotating art installations that take over the space. Every couple of months a different artist will be commissioned to create a vision for the space, continually evolving the guest experience and celebrating the act of creation.
The current installation is created by artist Harrison Boyce. Boyce is a New York based photographer & videographer known for his commercial work for brands such as Dries Van Noten, Nowness, Dazed & Confused, & Visionaire, and musicians such as Pusha T, Theophilus London & French Montana. The installation entitled “Nostalgia” is themed after soul music dance halls of the late 1970’s and the early hip-hop scene of the 1980’s. Boyce’s installation features oversized imagery of female soul dancers, graphic billboards of classic hip hop lyrics, and black and white photography throughout the space that captures the theatrics of the early days of hip hop music. The upper lounge that surrounds Half & Half’s sunken dance floor has been styled as a modern adult version of a classic arcade, featuring old-school games such as NBA Jam®, Ms. Pacman®, Mortal Kombat®, Arkanoid®, Street Fighter®, Frogger® and Golden Tee®.
