GRiZ Does it Again: “Throwback” & JMBLYA
Grant Kwiecinski (a.k.a. GRiZ) is a 23-year-old EDM producer, saxophonist, and music connoisseur with what seems like the entire world in his hands. The critically acclaimed “sexy sax man” has become notorious for his signature electronic sounds, saxophone solos, and hip-hop samples compiled into unique tracks and funk-smashing sets. Just when I think GRiZ can’t get any more awesome, he throws out a new track and plays a show near my hometown to further demonstrate the true depth of his talent.
The Mad Liberator’s latest surprise release “Throwback” shows the versatility of the young producer, as the style is a bit different from some of his previous releases. The 5 minute track, which was released in honor of #throwbackthursday, has a heavy trap influence with its basslines and hyphey drops, yet still possesses one of his notorious soulful saxophone solos. The sexy new track is destined to make any listener want to grab a good lookin’ dance partner and get the funk down.
I got to catch GRiZ this weekend at JMBLYA at Whitewater Amphitheater in New Braunfels, TX, and his set was my favorite out of an entire day’s worth of great music. What makes Grant’s livetronica performances so entertaining is his ability to know the vibe of the crowd and provide the right set for that particular wavelength.
GRiZ got the rowdy crowd moving with his spin on “Turn Down for What.” Then he proceeded to seamless blend new and classic hip-hop samples (IE: Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty to Me” and Dr. Dre’s “Next Episode”) into his original tracks from both Rebel Era and Mad Liberation, keeping fans from all GRiZ eras thrilled. My only complaint about his high-energy set is that he was given too early of a spot; it would have been incredible to rage out to his set later in the night when everything was dark.
It’s exciting to watch the budding performer grow within the festival community and live music scene, and I can’t wait to see where this amazingly talented producer/saxophonist will be in a few years from now. Whether releasing surprise new music, or playing a festival, one this is for sure: Grant Kwiecinski does not disappoint.
