EDC Track of the Week – Habstrakt “Movie” Feat. Josh Pan
Electric Daisy Carnival is one of the country’s biggest music festivals. From humble beginnings in California to a Las Vegas upgrade, the festival has stayed true to life Under the Electric Sky. Boasting values of love and acceptance, this festival has changed thousands of lives forever. This week, we explore one of the talented musicians heading to EDC this year, Habstrakt. This week’s Track of the Week is his latest, “Movie” feat. Josh Pan.
Hailing from France, Habstrakt takes dance music to another level. In addition to his never-ending repertoire of sounds, Habstrakt takes the structure of most electronic songs and turns it on its head. Each down beat is carefully constructed, with something different in every drop. Habstrakt holds onto his house music roots while adding a signature bounce few can successfully pull off, keeping the edges rough.
“Movie” Feat. Josh Pan comes out of the gate with a horn arpeggio and a drum riff to get the heart pumping. Smooth vocals set the pace, putting an R&B sound against an electronic backdrop. Thick complexities loom in the background, adding an epic accompaniment to the lyrics. As the track builds quickly to the drop, the beat berates the listener for a moment in a jarring transition. The listener is slapped in the face with a drop that combines the bounce of house with the chop of “riddim.” Hard yet extremely catchy, one can’t help but move in their seat as the beat continues for a few rounds. The vocals re-enter, allowing the listener a moment to get lost in Josh Pan’s smooth voice once again. The lyrics recite a cryptic story that is both sinister and poetic. As the second drop hits, the listener is primed and ready for Habstrakt’s hard-hitting nature. Fading into a smooth denouement, “Movie” begs for a second listen.
Check out Habstrakt Under the Electric Sky at Electric Daisy Carnival May 18 – 20th, 2018 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This year is the first year of Camp EDC, a new experience guaranteed to bring all attendees closer together.
