Heart Beats unveils UK legend DJ Q to Share His Trademark Brand of Bassline and Garage to New York City
Producer and DJ Shollen Quarshie aka DJ Q is making his long-awaited debut in New York City on December 7th at Rose Gold located on 96 Morgan Avenue in Brooklyn. It will be his first performance in New York through his accomplished career. Some might have heard of DJ Q as part of group t q d alongside Flava D and Royal T. Stepping out of the genre-specific norm, DJ Q provides an international palate utilizing the whole electronic spectrum incorporating garage, bassline, house, bass house, grime, jungle, and many more styles.
DJ Q was born in Huddersfield, UK and began his music career in 2001 at the age of 15 performing at local parties. Inspired by the garage sound that his parents would occasionally play, he went to expand his collection and saved up enough to buy his first decks to practice on. Shollen went on to study production at Leeds Metropolitan University where he started to develop his sound. His first big break was getting the role of hosting the UKG mix show on BBC Radio 1Xtra, which is a subsidiary of BBC Radio 1 aiming to promote ethnic sound from Britain, America, the Caribbean, and Africa. Hosting the show for 8 years established himself as a tastemaker for the youth as well as fans of the genres.
As Q rose in popularity between his appearances at the Nook in Holmfirth and his radio work, he produced his first release titled Love Like This (The Reasons) which made waves in the bassline scene. One of his first major hits was the track “You Wot” which was released on Ministry of Sound and developing that relationship was a strategic move and DJ Q would eventually start his own monthly show called the Essential Garage Show. Holding over 100 remixes under his belt he has worked with Dizzie Rascal, Keri Hilson, Katy B, and Amy Winehouse to name a few. In 2017 Q teamed up with Jamie Duggan to release a 3 cd project titled Pure Bassline which has features from respected artists like AC Slater, Redlight, Holy Goof, TS7, Skepsis, Low Steppa, Chris Lorenzo, Skepta, Valentino Khan, FooR, and many others.
December 7th, 2019 will be a remarkable moment in time regarding the New York City music scene, in a city that is constantly thriving off big energy and good entertainment, DJ Q is ready to cement his legacy in one of the most influential musical bastions. Joining him on this historic night will be NYC’s prominent performers Alex English, JamesCook, Apollo, Raphael Torres, Full Force, and a Heart Beats family set to end this night of sonic energy.
