Heidi Lynne Gluck Showcases Expertise Musicianship On ‘Pony Show’
Very rarely am I moved to the point of tears. Heidi Lynne Gluck delivered such elegance in such a way I cried upon first listen. Pony Show is a wild ride from start to finish — where Gluck shines bright against a soundscape of unadulterated sorrow and bliss. After spending over a decade of songwriting and studio sessions for others, the musician showcases her artistry by paying tribute to the those she considers the Holy Trinity — Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young. Throughout the album you feel their connection and importance to the singer, leaving quite an impact on how you listen.
As mentioned before, I was moved to tears. “Pony Show” opens with such fragility that shattering is the only response. The brooding “Mercury Rising” has such a haunting effect while “Sadness Is Psychedelic” is bittersweet and full of melancholy. “Better Homes & Gardens” is quite whimsical and feels out of place, but upon listening to the lyrics one can feel the discontent that Gluck sums up about mundane living. “Waiting For You To Say It” is a glorious folk-rock track where you can feel the artist’s kinship with the genre.
“Pin Striped Vest”is a simple folk tune with this particular sound — a light reverb — that lingers on like a ghost. “I Like ‘Em Cruel” is quite a bop compared to the succeeding song (“The Universe Had Split”), the latter featuring soft vocals paired against anthemic drumbeats with transitions to ballads before resuming its power play. “Wolf” is another haunting ballad where Gluck feels desperation in her pleas for obtaining the strength of said creature. “Jumping Vows” reminds me of the music I grew up on — a mix of Jewel and indie — and ending the album in a quiet and soft number.
Pony Show is a contender for album of the year — I can’t help but fall in love with every song. Each track breathed new life unto me and made me feel at home and at ease.
