‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ Will Feature Gay Character
Dreamworks’ upcoming animated film, How to Train Your Dragon 2 will feature a gay character. Gobber, voiced by Craig Ferguson, was revealed to be gay in an interview at the Cannes Film Festival. In the film, a scene plays out where Gobber watches a husband and wife fight and says that’s why he never married – plus another reason. Dean DeBlois, director for the film who is openly gay, said the addition a gay character in a film is “really fun [and a] daring move.” DeBlois in a statement to E! News added that the lines were ad-libbed by Ferguson.
DeBlois is considering expanding Goober’s gay storyline in future installments to shed light on his love life. Jay Baruchel who voices the main character, Hiccup, has supported the announcement saying, “Preaching tolerance in any respect is never a bad thing. I don’t know if drawing a massive amount of attention in the middle of a kid’s movie is like necessarily what you should be doing, but listen, if somebody catches it, then good for them.”
The addition of an openly gay character has drawn criticism from some parents, who say it is unnecessary to include LGBTQ characters and that children would not understand Goober’s storyline.
It is the second time a character has been confirmed as gay in a children’s animated picture, the first being Mitch from Laika’s ParaNorman in 2012, where the character openly addressed seeing a chick-flick with his boyfriend.
