Jakob Pek Perscribes Acoustic Medicine
Music is often described as medicine for the soul. Musicians of all styles and genres have the distinct ability to bring happiness and relief to the world with their music. Jakob Pek is a musician and artist based in Oakland, CA. He creates a contemporary world music for the new century. Avant-garde, experimental, and improvisational in nature, Jakob’s music interweaves chaos with symmetry, harmonizing refined expressions of familiar sonic worlds with journeys into uncharted domains of abstraction and discovery.Pek now has a brand new EP that takes his avant-garde and experimental sound to new heights. Appropriately dubbed Acoustic Medicine, Pek’s new EP is a vibrant panacea for all real music lovers.
Jakob is a multi-instrumentalist who began on violin at age four and has found his way to the piano, percussion, and the guitar. In performance, Jakob transmutes the instruments he plays into conduits of unfiltered, raw music. He strives to reveal and express what he believes to be the truth, that “sound is music”. Born in B.C. Canada, raised in Las Vegas, NV, and having lived in Washington and California, the spirit of the North American West Coast finds expression through Jakob’s sound.
The five tunes featured on Pek’s EP Accoustic Medicine, have a soul soothing quality that captivates the listener and creates immense contemplative mental space. “Surrendered To Grace” opens up the collection of songs with stirring acoustic instrumentation, perfectly greeting the listener into Pek’s mesmerizing sonic world. Next “Sweet Memory’s Melody” continues to draw Pek’s audience in with a much more atmospheric and almost cinematic approach. This tune feels like it would be right at home during a pivotal scene of a dramatic movie or perhaps as the background sound for a riveting nature show. “Angel’s Hymn” certainly has a celestial quality to it, seemingly replicating the lofty language that angelic beings would actually speak to one another. You can almost see balls of light floating in space and communicating in an ethereal nature. The EP comes to a close with the epic final song “The Great Return” which is my favorite of the four. The song bobs and weaves coming to life in surprising ways and certainly takes the listener on an exhilarating ride through Pek’s impressive acoustic mastery. Check out the video for the EP’s haunting title track “Acoustic Medicine” below.
To hear Jakob perform is to hear a well-versed specialist of improvisation. Inspired in equal parts by nature and culture, Jakob’s improvisations feel somehow transcontinental and transhistorical, yet distinctly of the here and now. A single improvised session by Jakob may traverse a multitude of atmospheres all with a well-trained formal flow and clarity.
