Jazz Passengers w/ Roy Nathanson, Marc Ribot, Pete Karp & The ICE Junior & Senior Songwriters @ LITTLEFIELD, Sunday, 1.3
In 2007, Roy Nathanson received a Chamber Music America grant to write music based around poems he wrote while riding the subway to teach at Institute for Collaborative Education (I.C.E.), 6-12th grade NYC public school. After releasing both a book and CD based on these poems, Nathanson coached his students at I.C.E to write their subway inspired songs and Subway Moon was born. In 2009, Nathanson brought his NYC students and his band, The Jazz Passengers – to the Banlieus of Paris to perform those Subway-themed pieces along with students from the Paris Banlieus and their Paris Metro inspired pieces.
This “Subway Moon” production became the model for 5 more subsequent international collaborations in Newcastle England, Munich and Hamburg Germany and at Cooper Union in NYC.
The public/private quality of our shared underground world has proven to be a rich source of intergenerational and intercultural material.
On Sunday, January 3rd at 1pm The Jazz Passengers with guest Marc Ribot will share the stage with another new incarnation of newly written ICE student Subway Songs.
