Julien the Child is Certainly “Self-Aware”
By fusing elements of indie-rock together with the driving energy of electronic music, Julien the Child has caught our attention with his latest single “Self-Aware.” Julien The Child is an American musical project from Tampa, FL, formed by Oliver Eldridge. Inspired by the sonic simplicity of Joy Division, the lyrical depth of Bright Eyes and the pop experimentation of Radical Face and tUNe-yArDs, Eldridge showcases his own brand of indie electronic pop music.
Throughout this fresh new track, Eldridge displays an infectious energy that not only pulls the listener in deeper and deeper, but will also have you reaching for the replay button as soon as the track comes to an end. A groovy yet direct bass line pairs perfectly with a catchy piano riff. Eldridge’s tremendous vocals take center stage as soon as the song’s blistering chorus gets going.
“Self-Aware” has the type of lyrics that really begin to speak to you on the second and even third listen. The thoughtful lyrics grab at the heartstrings as Eldridge bellows his heart out. In my opinion, this tune reminds me of the same frantic, yet genuine energy, channeled by one of my favorite indie-electronic bands Matt & Kim.
A songwriter since age ten, 24-year-old Oliver Eldridge created Julien the Child in 2016, after a decade of independently releasing music under various monikers. The project began with You Have Not Heard Silence, a collection of older songs that were re-recorded by Eldridge in the back room of his grandmother’s trailer and released as the project’s debut full length album on August 1, 2016.
With his quirky and unique style, I can definitely see Julien The Child carving out some real estate for himself in the ever expanding world of indie-electronic crossover. Be sure to connect with Julien The Child on Facebook, Soundcloud and his official website!
