Late Night Spotlight: Vulfpeck Does Fool’s Paradise
If you haven’t heard, Florida is getting yet another multi-day music extravaganza come April 1, 2016. The good folks at Purple Hat Productions have teamed up with Live for Live Music and festival favorites Lettuce for a funk-fueled Fool’s Paradise in the oldest city in the country, St. Augustine. The two day event, which will take place April 1-2, 2016, has lined up Lettuce and Friends, Chris Robinson’s Soul Revue featuring George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, Nikki Glaspie, Eric Krasno, Neal Casal & The Shady Horns, The Nth Power, GRiZ, Goldfish, and Vulfpeck to take care of the jams, with other activities including artist excursions throughout the weekend.
Okay. Now that you are caught up on the details, we need to talk Vulfpeck. Fool’s Paradise has two late night shows planned to take place at an offsite venue each night after the main event. These shows are ticketed separately so you might be tempted to skip out and save the extra cash, but for the love of God, call an Uber, carpool, do whatever you have to do to get to the Elk’s Lodge to see Vulfpeck throw down on April 1. If you’re not familiar with the Michigan-based funk foursome, you are going to want to mosey on over to their YouTube and watch every video, and then proceed to iTunes and buy all of the tunes.
These guys are putting out sounds that are at once vintage and modern. They will hook you with old school soul and R&B grooves, and keep you around with catchy melodies and feel-good funk jams. Vulfpeck founder, Jack Stratton, brought together keyboardist Woody Goss, bassist Joe Dart, and Theo Katzman on guitar and drums to form a rhythm section that he conceived as German version of Motown session musicians the Funk Brothers. On recent EPs and live performances the group has brought in guest artists to contribute vocals, horns, keys and guitar. Soul man Antwuan Stanley has become a favorite of Vulfpeck fans after laying down his buttery vocals on some of their most popular tunes including “Wait for the Moment,” “Funky Duck,” and “1612,” which he joined the band on for their performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Vulfpeck has been paired up with Break Science for the first late night show of Fool’s Paradise on Friday, April 1st. These shows are limited capacity and will sell out quickly, so do not wait to get your tickets! You can pick up tickets to Vulfpeck and Break Science, as well as Saturday’s late night show with Goldfish and a Fools for Funk Supergroup with members yet to be announced, on the official Fool’s Paradise website.
In the meantime, do yourself a favor and dive into some Vulfpeck. Their most recent album, Thrill of the Arts, along with their other projects, can be found on Amazon and iTunes.
