Lotus Returns as Headliner for Summer Dance VI
Last year during the winter holidays, the writers and editors here at Sensible Reason posted a “Wish List” article, where a number of us wrote about the one thing we dreamed of getting that holiday season. The list ranged the gamut, from exotic eco-adventures in Belize to new iPads. My wish list item? Something slightly less well-known – the return of a Lotus-headlined Summer Dance. To my absolute delight, my dream is coming true this August.
Just about two years ago, I had the pleasure of attending a little music festival in Nelson Ledges Quarry Park in Garrettsville, OH called Summer Dance. The festival was in its fourth year, and as in each year before it, 2011 featured the instrumental quintet Lotus as the headliner performing two nights. It was a weekend that changed my life forever.
The festival is nestled in a beautiful national park which features a natural quarry lake with a beach and shaded forest camping on the ledges towering above the lake. Snorkeling, cliff jumping, cave exploring, trail walking, swimming, and sunbathing on the beach are all activities festival goers can enjoy in between catching music. And with less than four thousand people in attendance, only one main stage with no overlapping sets, and only a five minute walk to the music from nearly anywhere in the park you could possibly find yourself, it’s one of the more intimate music festival experiences of the summer. But it’s more than just that.
Summer Dance became the “family” gathering destination for a large group of dedicated Lotus fans who, for four years straight, could always count on a Summer Dance and the opportunity to spend time with friends from afar and see their favorite band perform multiple nights all in one weekend. Unfortunately, last summer, Lotus did not appear. Fans feared the unknown – was this the end of the Lotus-headlined Summer Dance? When I wrote my wish list entry, I had serious doubts about a return in 2013.
Luckily, my doubts never materialized, and I can happily report that Lotus will return to Nelson Ledges Quarry Park for Summer Dance VI! It will take place August 30 through September 1, with Lotus headlining on August 30 and 31 and additional appearances by Future Rock, Zoogma, Grimace Federation, and Orchard Lounge. The solo projects of several members of Lotus will also perform: Beard-o-Bees (featuring bassist Jesse Miller), Luke the Knife (featuring guitarist and keys player Luke Miller), and Nunchuck (featuring percussionist Chuck Morris). September 1 will feature performances by One More Time – Daft Punk Tribute, Arpetrio, The Manhattan Project, and others yet to be announced. Tickets can be purchased here.
See you all at the Ledges!
